Illustration needed[edit]

I think this article could be improved with a diagram illustrating this distinctive sloop design. --ScottMainwaring 04:08, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I made an attempt at a diagram and removed the 'Reqdiagram' box from above. I know the drawing is a little rough if you look at the hi-res version, but I hope it's acceptable! Branchc (talk) 13:23, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proper noun?[edit]

Is "Friendship Sloop" a proper noun? In either case, the article isn't consistent. Rklawton 00:53, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, this should be moved to Friendship sloop (currently a redirect). Equinox 12:19, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The refs cited seem to be very mixed on this, with only Hinckley consistently calling it a "Friendship Sloop". Even the "Friendship Sloop Society" is inconsistent, something I put down to people generally not understanding the difference between a proper and common noun in English. I think it all comes down to what the name of the boat class is. If it is "Friendship" and then described as a sloop, then "Friendship sloop" is correct as "sloop" would be just a descriptive common noun. If it is the "Friendship Sloop" class, then it is a proper noun and both words should be capitalized throughout. - Ahunt (talk) 18:42, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I thank Ahunt for the added care in looking at this issue. For me the distinction between having a society that shares enthusiasm for a type of boat and a class association, is that the society follows and the class association leads in all matters pertaining to the type of boat, including design, construction, logo and class name. The society and the rest of us should just follow the rules of English grammar and usage. Since there is no class for this type of boat, I advocate for changing the article title to "Friendship sloop", i.e. a sloop characteristic of those once found in Friendship, Maine.
