Fishing articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Fishing articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject Boats[edit]

FYI, there is a proposal for a WP:BOATS to cover watercraft in their boat-like aspects that are smaller than that covered by WPSHIPS. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Boats

WikiProject cleanup listing[edit]

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:54, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Help needed: American lobster[edit]

I have been gradually improving our article on the American lobster, and I've finished most of what I can do. The main outstanding task is to provide references for the fisheries section (or rewrite it with references). Can anyone here help? I know very little about fishing and fisheries, particularly in the United States, so any assistance would be much appreciated. --Stemonitis (talk) 06:03, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to assist in adding donated content: GLAM/ARKive[edit]

Hi,

I am the Wikipedia Outreach Ambassador to ARKive, who have kindly agreed to donate an initial 200 article texts about endangered species from their project, to Wikipedia, under a CC-BY-SA license. Details are on the GLAM/ARKive project page. The donated texts include many about fishes. Your help, to merge the donated texts into articles, would be appreciated. Guidelines for doing so are also on the above page. Once articles have been expanded using the donated texts, we are also seeking assistance in having those articles translated into other languages. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, on the project's talk page, or my own. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:58, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Template that needs some work[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Fishing_location_topics - is anyone interested in separating USA states from other places? - surely there are other locations that could help create fishing location into separate continent or ocean/sea templates - with Australia as a part of a group of US states is really odd - either there is not much fishing article work being done anymore - or something is wrong... SatuSuro 06:52, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Waal... that was a template I wrote some years ago when I was trying to sort out the fishing articles. My expectation was that, over time, more articles about recreational fishing specific to different localities would appear. That hasn't happened so far, though I still expect it will, given enough time. They are obvious articles waiting to be written. So really its just a template which hasn't come into its own yet. I don't think it matters what happens to it at this stage. Australia could be removed, and it could be renamed something like "Recreational fishing in the United States. Or it could just be deleted. But I don't see much point in making either of those moves right now. It's not doing much harm, and it might prompt someone to write articles for it. Eventually enough articles will be written to clothe it more respectably, and it can be rationalised then. If it is to be kept, it should probably be rewritten as a footer template, not a side template. --Epipelagic (talk) 08:23, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Fishing vs fishing industry articles[edit]

Category:Fishing by country contains a mix of fishing and fishing industry articles. In the long term there should be articles that will fit Category:Fishing by country and a Category:Fishing industry by country. Meanwhile, the current set of articles should be checked to see it they are correctly titled as "Fishing in [Country]" or "Fishing industry in [Country]". -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 02:05, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Better categories might be Category:Recreational fishing by country, and either Category:Industrial fishing by country or Category:Commercial fishing by country. But many more articles are needed before there is much point in this split. --Epipelagic (talk) 03:16, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Shrimps and prawns[edit]

You are invited to join the discussion at Talk:Shrimp#Caridea, Dendrobranchiata, Shrimp and Prawns. Does the term shrimp refer to a taxon or to a common name, and what is the scope of the shrimp and prawn articles? – Epipelagic (talk) 03:04, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Is seafood a subset of cuisine?[edit]

Should articles on seafood be given titles that restrict them to cuisines, as a user maintains in this thread? There is a referral for comment on this issue where members of this project are invited to give their views. --Epipelagic (talk) 23:12, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Aquaculture by country[edit]

I created a Aquaculture by country page per WP:CLT. It is just a list but it deserves to be a fully fledged article. An Aquaculture in the United States article is a notable omission. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 22:34, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Rainbow trout nominated for GA[edit]

I've been upgrading the Rainbow trout article for the last couple of weeks. Essentially it was very unbalanced with too much emphasis on steelhead, instead on the type species Oncorhynchus mykiss and associated subspecies. The Rainbow trout is a complex topic and I trust I've made sufficient changes to warrant Good Article status. Any suggestions or help from this project would be appreciated.--Mike Cline (talk) 02:59, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

Rainbow trout achieved GA status last week and I've requested a Peer review in advance of an attempt at FA status. Any feedback is welcome. --Mike Cline (talk) 14:58, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update[edit]

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:05, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet for Wikiproject Fisheries and Fishing at Wikimania 2014(updated version)[edit]

Please note: This is an updated version of a previous post that I made.

Project Leaflet WikiProject Medicine back and front v1.png

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

List of the most commonly harvested fish[edit]

Launch of WikiProject Wikidata for research[edit]

Hi, this is to let you know that we've launched WikiProject Wikidata for research in order to stimulate a closer interaction between Wikidata and research, both on a technical and a community level. As a first activity, we are drafting a research proposal on the matter (cf. blog post). Your thoughts on and contributions to that would be most welcome! Thanks, -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:15, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

FAR of Marine shrimp farming[edit]

I have nominated Marine shrimp farming for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:33, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

New fly fishing related infobox[edit]

I've created an infobox for Artificial fly articles. {{infobox artificial fly}}. Comments are welcome, especially if there are additional parameters that should be added to the template. WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages[edit]

Magic Wand Icon 229981 Color Flipped.svg

Greetings WikiProject Fisheries and Fishing Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 17:59, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Articles for inclusion[edit]

Wildlife management Areas, such as those in Louisiana, that are under the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, would seem to be a natural fit in this project. If someone would care to weigh in on this? 23:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)-- Otr500 (talk) 01:10, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report is back![edit]

Hi all, the Community Tech team has been working hard to bring back the Popular pages report. The report for this project can be found at [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Fisheries and Fishing /Popular pages]]. I've made a redirect from the older link Wikipedia:WikiProject Fisheries and Fishing/Article traffic statistics to make the link consistent across projects. If you're not happy with this change and want to stick with the older link (not recommended), please ping me and I will take care of it. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 23:36, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
