This is an important article on a community and industry in upstate New York. It could be expanded, but is of great use to area historians and those interested in the history of the area.

I'm a descesdant of John Garbutt. According to my Uncle, John Garbutt was born in the same town and was the same age as Thomas Paine. He was also 'kicked out of England' for reading Thomas Paine's book 'Common Sense' to illiterates in England. He migrated to America and became active in the Revolution. I don't know if he founded Garbutt N.Y, but if not, his descendants did. There should be more of a discussion about John Garbutt on this page.
