This article needs to be reorganized, badly...
I just want to say how much better it looks to have the contents on the top right like this. It's just much better to look at and easier to use - thanks to whoever thought of it. All articles should have that feature in my opinion.
Broken reference link
[edit]I realized that I wasn't logged in when I removed this reference with a broken link: 5: Unknown author. (accessed last: 4/16/04). Gas Core Nuclear Rocket. [Online] available: http://www.islandone.org/APC/Nuclear/08.html Regards Trilobitealive (talk) 15:48, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
issue of heat transfer
[edit]I was reading some NASA reports before they were removed from NASA web page, and I didn't found an answer to the question of heat transfer of heat from nuclear fuel ( U/ UF4 / UF6 gas/plasma ) to the working gas/propelant (hydrogen). At high temperature the heat is transferred predominantly by radiation (rather than conduction). However, hydrogen gas is very much transparrent for this radiation. In the reports is mantioned that "seeding of hydrogen gas is required". If sepcific impuls of 5000-7000 m/s should be achieved, this corresponds to temperature of 50,000-100,000 Kelvin of the exhaust gas. Highest temperature solid/liquid seeding material (Tungsten of Hafniumi-tantalum carbide) would evaporate under 5000-6000 K. So I don't see, and I didn't found any explanation how to seed in order to achive temperatures order of magnitude higher.
>>I think if you turn gas into plasma state it becomes opaque to all radiation, so you only need to seed it to turn into plasma.
I think reactor itself will face same problem as it will become opaque to all radiation and thus core will heat up to the temperatures until it will start emitting thermal Xrays — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.61.247.206 (talk) 23:48, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
External links modified
[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just added archive links to one external link on Gas core reactor rocket. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}}
after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}}
to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:
- Added archive http://web.archive.org/web/20051115182102/http://www.inspi.ufl.edu/research/gcr/index.html to http://www.inspi.ufl.edu/research/gcr/index.html
When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}
).
