Names of Gaudemar Charpinel[edit]

Hi Borsoka ,

The point is not whether or not "to list all his French names (this is the English version of WP)": it just happens that - whichever WP we are talking about - he was a French Crusader, bearing a French name, and that we should try to identify by which name he was best known.

As it is, there is a remarkable uncertainty about what his name really was: you will find more sources about him looking for Galdemar Carpinel, Galdemar Carpinelle, Geldemar Charpenel, or Gaudemar Charpinel than just looking for "Geldemar Carpenel" (in-line citations for each of the names I mentioned would be readily available). Now, sticking just with "Geldemar Carpenel" could be seen as some kind of personal "point of view" rather than an extensive, neutral search of relevant sources about him.

WP:NAME and WP:English. We are to mention the names used by works published in English. Do you really think that a list of his dozens names in the first sentence of the article adds value to our project? Borsoka (talk) 17:13, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What does add value to our project is to realize there is an unusual lot of uncertainty about his name, which can hinder the use of other adequate sources. As regards WP:NAME and WP:English, you are quite right, of course, even though some English sources may pop up under the alternative names I indicated. But OK though, not as many as under "Geldemar Carpenel". Azurfrog (talk) 17:34, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The most prominent forms of his name used in English literature could be mentioned in the first sentence. The uncertainty about his name could be explained in the main text. Borsoka (talk) 17:47, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
