Is there reasonable evidence that Grantly Dick-Read was a real person? Or is he just a fictional character invented by Amy Tuteur? And does the book exist? If so, is there reasonable evidence it was printed when and by whom the bibliographies claim? (Collin237) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.203.183.57 (talk) 18:52, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Childbirth in Africa

[edit]

It seems from the article and the linked references that Dick-Read's observations of childbirth in Africa were a major influence on his advocacy of 'natural' childbirth. In one of the linked articles he is quoted as saying that 'well over 90%' of African childbirths, using traditional methods, go well. But this seems to conflict with reliable modern data on African childbirth, still overwhelmingly 'traditional', which suggest that the risks are alarmingly high, with about one in twenty mothers dying, and many others suffering serious trauma. See for example here: http://www.theguardian.com/journalismcompetition/giving-birth-the-most-dangerous-thing-an-african-woman-can-do There seem to be three ways of reconciling the apparent conflict: a) African childbirth has got more dangerous since Dick-Read's time; b) Dick-Read's observations or summaries are not reliable; c) Dick-Read considered a 5-10 percent risk of catastrophic outcome acceptable. Perhaps someone more familiar with his work can resolve this.109.146.52.177 (talk) 09:25, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
