Name (HFX Wanderers FC or HFX Wanderers)[edit]

I'm just going to link to this thread on the CPL page, so this discussion doesn't need to happen twice. Once that's settled this article can be moved accordingly if necessary. Blue jays (talk) 20:59, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Player club names[edit]

The talk thread doesn't really clarify what name for player pages, so are we keeping them as HFX Wanderers FC, or HFX Wanderers for player infoboxes? Vince193 (talk) 16:04, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What do the reliable sources call it? Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:08, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
My preference would be "HFX Wanderers". That's how it's usually written in the media and removing the "FC" does not make things ambiguous like it might for "Los Angeles" vs. "Los Angeles FC". BLAIXX 17:14, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
They flip flop. And These days going through their website I see HFX Wanderers and just wanderers. They don't really use FC. On Social media they do use FC as part of their hashtag. I don't think you can go wrong with either but I agree with you I much prefer omitting FC. York9's page has started doing it but they're easier to pin down since they keep referring to themselves as York9.Vince193 (talk) 17:32, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Search for HFX Wanderers only in news, about 10,000 results while HFX Wanderers FC in the same, is about 1/3 of those results. Obvious conclusion. Common name is HFX Wanderers. Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:47, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Since 2019, things have changed a bit with the club identity -- they're now billing themselves consistently as "Halifax Wanderers", and "HFX Wanderers" is only used in the site URL, the team crest, and other instances where an abbreviation makes sense. I'd like to change the introductory paragraph to reflect the "soft rebrand", but I also want to raise the point here, because someday there might be a desire to change the title of the page itself, but I fear that would cause more problems than it solves. HumblePieEater (talk) 18:50, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I just asked the club, and their official full name is now "Halifax Wanderers Football Club". HumblePieEater (talk) 19:29, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's clear that the team is using "Halifax" in place of "HFX" now ([1] [2]) and it's worth listing it as a name in the intro. It's unclear when exactly the change happened so I don't think we can say it happened in 2022. BLAIXX 14:48, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the 2022 Canada Soccer Annual Report (page 45), the team is listed as "Halifax Wanderers". In the 2020 Annual Report, they're listed as "HFX Wanderers of Halifax". Would a link to the 2022 Report be a sufficient citation for establishing that as the full name? HumblePieEater (talk) 11:01, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(Or, the citations BLAIXX provided, as well. Sorry, I'm still new to Wikipedia editing.) HumblePieEater (talk) 11:08, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome to Wikipedia! For the short name, both are used interchangeably with the club preferring "Halifax" but the league still mostly using "HFX". For the full name, I found this article from November 2021: "Halifax Wanderers Football Club Football Department Update". That, along with the 2022 Canada Soccer report is good enough for me to say that the name has changed but I'm still uncertain of an exact date. BLAIXX 15:27, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
