What is the "eastern half" of the United States?

[edit]

The article claims that Hamilton County is the most sparsely populated in the "eastern half" of the United States. Since Alaska is a western state and distorts the "halves" so much, this could be interpreted to mean anywhere east of a line running through approximately the western part of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Texas. If this were the literal meaning of the statement, then most of the counties in these states, in addition to all of Kansas and Oklahoma, would literally be in the "eastern half". In this case then, Kenedy County, Texas would qualify as the most sparsely populated.

I would assume that the author meant the states east of and including Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, which would mean approximately half of the contiguous United States. Backspace (talk) 02:25, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
