This article has a reference to "hip plantations", that without further context makes one think of a cross between the East Village and the Deep South. It seems to mean "rose hip plantations" as far as I can tell from a brief search through, yes, Wikipedia. Without that qualifier, this reference is probably a mystery to most modern readers, and possibly other readers who don't have an intimate knowledge of these (possibly) agricultural practices.
