Copyright violation[edit]

I have removed an edit by User:GrumpyGuts as plagiarism, per WP:COPYVIO, which states "If some, but not all, of the content of a page appears to be a copyright infringement, then the infringing content should be removed, and a note to that effect should be made on the discussion page, along with the original source, if known." This edit amounts to the following text:

"The London Brick works at Peterborough had the largest Hoffman Kiln in the world, capable of holding 1,000,000 bricks at a time. It has been estimated that the production of London bricks hit a peak of 16 million per day. [1]"

  1. ^ London Brick Works at Bookrag Peterborough brick making

The source, given at (1), states:

"The London Brick works at Peterborough had the largest Hoffman Kiln in the world, capable of holding 1,000,000 bricks at a time. It has been estimated that the production of London bricks hit a peak of 16 million per day."

Although BookRags attributes the information to an unsourced claim on the Wikipedia article, London Brick Company (which cannot be used as a source on Wikipedia), it imposes the following terms of use, under the heading material ownership:

"BookRags content may be downloaded or printed for personal use, but may not be distributed for any reason whatsoever. Any distribution of the BookRags Book Notes is a violation of the copyrighted works. Any individual, company, or entity found to have copied from BookRags will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. All of the Content on BookRags.com is copyrighted. No copies, sales, modifications, uploading, or any other form of copyright infringement will be permitted and will be punished to the full extent of the law."

The whole BookRags article appears to have been copied from this 2 January 2008 version of The London Brick Company, so BookRags has no copyright to it. The page history of The London Brick Company shows that the 2 January 2008 version is the result of many edits by different people so I see no sign it was copied from elsewhere.
The issue of a reliable source is another matter. This removal counts as a challenge per Wikipedia:Verifiability#Burden of evidence, so a reliable source should be given if the material is restored. Wikipedia does not consider Wikipedia articles to be reliable sources, so The London Brick Company cannot be used as source. BookRags (and many other websites) has copied that article but Wikipedia mirrors cannot be used as sources since they just copy Wikipedia claims without having professional editors checking them. Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published sources says: "Articles and posts on Wikipedia, or other websites that mirror Wikipedia content, may not be used as sources."
If The London Brick Company references a reliable source for the disputed material then that reference can be copied to Hoffmann kiln. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:49, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect description[edit]

A Hoffmann kiln does not have a moving fire. The fire is built and fed in a periodic succession of adjacent rooms. Hot gasses exhausting from the fire-room are directed through successive rooms to begin heating bricks or tiles therein; and, cool air, feeding the fire, is drawn in over already fired bricks to speed up their cooling. See http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2009/10/hoffmann-kilns-brick-and-tile-production.html for an in depth description of most iterations of the Hoffmann.

It is even mentioned in the German Wikipedia Hoffmann article that the USA version has it wrong.

The cited article has quite a few references to substantiate my point.

What is described in the USA article sounds like a hybrid between a Hoffmann and a tunnel kiln.
