Locomotion No 1

[edit]

"The ... steam locomotive, Locomotion No 1, was on display in a workshop ... on the same site from 1857 to the 1880s." Is this true? Smiles in the "Lives of the Engineers" writing in 1862 refers to: "This engine .. has recently been placed upon a pedestal in front of the railway station at Darlington". See Vol III, p175. There is also a line engraving in the text of Locomotion on its pedestal with the title "The No 1. Engine at Darlington". Visible on the front of the pedestal is the text: "S&D.Ry No1. 1825." which from memory is the same as that on the pedestal it occupied in 1975. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Martin of Sheffield (talkcontribs) 12:13, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
