HI men/women seperation

[edit]

POINT - Worth mentioning that as a general rule, HI still retain seperation between men and women in dorms, and in most cases won´t have double rooms for couples.

  • To the above point, as of the year 2006 a large portion of hostels now offer co-ed accomidation, family rooms, and double rooms for couples. The above information is subjective to a few europian and asian countries.
HI hostels don't necessarily separate men and women. I've seen co-ed dorms at HI hostels in the USA, and widely in Argentina, where HI hostels are often no different to independent party hostels (co-ed dorms, bars, crazy drinking, swimming pool, etc.) Let99 (talk) 13:46, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I disagree with Adam.J.W.C. that there are too many links. He deleted the link to Stayokay, the official Dutch Youth Hostel Association. It is my opinion that as an offical Youth Hostel Association Stayokay deserves a link in this article. RaF 18:35, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Who ?

[edit]

"He founded the nationwide German Youth Hostel Association in 1919." : Who ? Schirrmann or Münker ? If it's both of them, we must write "they"... Svilleneuve (talk) 01:44, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HI-USA Hostels

[edit]

This statement doesn't seem right: "The youth hostels in the United States, started by Monroe Smith, (where backpackers have not made as much of an impact as elsewhere) are still closest to the original setup." In what way? There are no chores or curfews at HI-USA hostels, and many of them are in big cities. Let99 (talk) 13:49, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nonprofit Status

[edit]

I think a mention should be made about the legal nonprofit or charity status of individual HI organizations -- for example, HI-USA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization while (as far as I know) HI Canada lost its charity status, and YHA England/Wales has discussed becoming a commercial company. It is not always clear from the literature that only some of the HI organizations have the legal status of charity. These are important details. Let99 (talk) 14:04, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Christmas truce

[edit]

I think the Christmas Truce would be good to include on this page:

from page: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Truce" From an account by Richard Schirrmann, who was in a German regiment holding a position on the Bernhardstein, one of the mountains of the Vosges, and separated from the French troops by a narrow no-man’s-land, described by him as “strewn with shattered trees, the ground ploughed up by shellfire, a wilderness of earth, tree-roots and tattered uniforms.” Military discipline was soon restored, but Schirrmann pondered over the incident, and whether “thoughtful young people of all countries could be provided with suitable meeting places where they could get to know each other.” He went on to found the German Youth Hostel Association in 1919.[11]

Thefts

[edit]

While addressing thefts at Hostels is worthwhile, we should find some source information comparing security at different backpackers hostels, independent hostels, hotels, campground facilities, and bed and breakfasts —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.171.11.36 (talk) 16:37, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
