Image rescue

[edit]

Many images at this article have been deleted for lack of a fair use rationale, but they are valid to illustrate the topic. Can anyone with administrator permissions undelete the images and provide a rationale, so that this article doesn't look like a minefield? Thanks. Diego Moya (talk) 15:20, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A few of them are currently listed for potential rescue. The intention is to upload some new (currently redlinked) images as the article warrants. --Trevj (talk) 16:33, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the context of having a variety of images viewable to all, any potential excessive use can also be reviewed - with links to some files being removed if they're not considered essential for a thorough understanding of the subject. Any orphaned non-free content could then be deleted again. --Trevj (talk) 09:35, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Since cleaned up but the image rescue process is not abandoned. --Trevj (talk) 12:22, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done Some alt text may need reviewing. Image use satisfies Non-free content criteria. Ready for RO6 additions by someone. -- Trevj (talk) 15:58, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the hard work! Diego (talk) 10:39, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments comparing icon bar to Mac's dock by Richard Hallas

[edit]

Road to Mac OS X Leopard: Dock 1.6 may be usable as a comparison. -- Trevj (talk) 20:23, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Updates and stuff

[edit]

Why does it say "Additionally, temporarily bringing the icon bar to the front of the window stack was enhanced by invoking this feature through moving the pointer to the bottom of the screen (previously this required 'Shift-F12' on the keyboard)." under RISC OS 4? This feature is present in RISC OS 3.7. It may be present in 3.6 but I don't have ROM images for RedSquirrel. It doesn't appear to work with 3.5. Icon bar pop up was actually implemented in the nested wimp. Page amended accordingly. Didn't one of the RiscPC versions also bring in the inertial acceleration idea to make scrolling infeasibly large iconbars a little less painful?

Additionally, it might be worth making a more detailed split between RISC OS 3 "Archimedes era" and the "RiscPC era"? Just for reference, the "3D look and feel" was a Style Guide modification devised in late 1992, and aided by the "!NewLook" application which tarted up RISC OS 3.1x to look a little less boring. All of this predates RISC OS 3.5. It may be worth providing a brief explanation of what "icon grouping" actually means. I did write something, but it was an entire paragraph. Hmmm...

Personally I would merge RISC OS 4 and RISC OS 6 together. I'll await being flamed for this idea. ;-) "Additionally, the refinements for consistency and Style Guide compliance in RISC OS 6 have also been reflected in many icons under this version of the OS." - reads like advertising.

Another candidate for update is the RISC OS 5 entry which is the version currently being actively developed and while the icon bar is largely the same (one could say this for most versions since the RiscPC era), it can feature an "appropriate" task manager icon, such as a big red raspberry for - obviously enough - the RaspberryPi.

Updated HeyRick1973 (talk) 17:23, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As I could never afford an Archimedes, the first RISC OS machine I owned was a 1994 RO3.5 RiscPC - hence I'm unsure about a number of things without trawling through magazines. I've removed the bit you noted as appearing promotional, per WP:UNDUE because the general OS icon updates don't seem to me to be too relevant to this icon bar article. Regarding the options for a custom task manager icon, isn't that also possible under previous versions? I thought it was simply a case of amending a sprite file and doing *iconsprites or whatever... perhaps I'm wrong. -- Trevj (talk · contribs) 05:48, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
