New page name
[edit]I transfered the entire page over to this one, for the reasons of 1) clarity of event (someone actually asked why it was called "Indianapolis 500"), and 2) actual name. Though the name has been different at times in previous eras, Indianapolis 500-Mile Race is its actual current title, and thus more accurate. --Chr.K. 00:36, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
- "Indianapolis 500-Mile Race" is in fact NOT the name of the race. Please check the race's official website that nowhere includes "-Mile Race" in any of its logos, titles, or press information. -Drdisque 00:58, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

- The name's official title has been the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race since 1981, when it was changed from the previous 500-Mile International Sweepstakes Race. Indianapolis 500 is a shortened term, like the even shorter Indy 500, whether you accept it or not. On the second point, I agree. - On televised media, Paul Page would introduce the ABC Sports broadcast of the race with the official/technical name, often with a 'flair for the dramatic', i.e. 1990's "Live, and for the first time in stereophonic sound (new technology being introduced that broadcast, apparently), ABC Sports presents: the 74th running of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race." Mike King, the current Voice of the 500, has used the phrase as well, on numerous occasions when the "longer phrase" is called for.

- Sportswriter Ed Hinton remembering his first 500 covered in 1975...with official name at top of page
- Racingone.com reporting on Pat Flaherty, and here his victory in the 1956 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race (hyphen included this time)
- Example of site calling it by both names, with the Indianapolis 500 name first at top, but later, in 1998 500 reference in article, using the whole name for description of '98 race being dedicated to Mary Fendrich Hulman, Tony Hulman's then-newly late wife
