Correction Needed
[edit]The beginning of this article reads wrong to me. "RoI population now is X. In year Y RoI population was Z." But in year Y, RoI did not exist, so are we to assume that these figures are an estimate for the population of the land that now makes up the RoI ? Or are we to assume that the figure Z for year Y is for the of Ireland (in which case there is no comparison because NI population should be added to X to give a comparable figure). Either way, this needs amending. Anyone know the score here ? --jrleighton 14:36, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, this page refers to the population of "Ireland" yet all figures after 1922 seem to refer only to the Republic of Ireland> This should be amended if this page is to reflect the entire island. --RKernan RKernan 18:01, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
The graph displayed has a nonlinear time scale, due to incorrectly formatted data in the automated plot. A corrected image is visible at: http://www.magma.ca/~legg/TVS/ireland_population.png My editing skills/experience does not extent to correcting or substituting this image in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legg robt. 1841
[edit]Starting in 1841 looks a little POV. 14:50, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
- I made both graphs. The reason for starting at 1841 in the graph used here is because that is when census begins in Ireland - before that time, the CSO simply doesn't have any figures. The graph starting in 1750 is based on historical guesswork drawn from numerous sources and not suitable for this article. --sony-youthpléigh 21:48, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
In 1841, the population is listed closer to 8.2 million here: http://www.grantonline.com/grant-family-genealogy/Records/population/population-ireland.htm
Which is correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.20.45.133 (talk) 15:24, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
The caption of this graph should be corrected, there was no Irish Republic in 1841.--Nico b. (talk) 11:18, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
Scope of article
[edit]I also agree this article should cover:
- Population before 1841, as far back as scholarly sources exist
- The whole island, since Demographics of the Republic of Ireland already covers the Republic
File:IrelandEuropePopulation1750.PNG is a good graph, though it doesn't say where it gets its data from, and the author says it's not reliable. (In which case I'm not sure why it's on the encyclopedia at all.)
The name of the article is also odd, shouldn't it be "Demographic history of Ireland" or something? Demographics of the Republic of Ireland apparently needs some all-island content offloaded; this could become Demographics of Ireland, which is current a disambiguation page (used to redirect here). -- Beland (talk) 20:07, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- This has since been fixed. -- Beland (talk) 06:19, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
Deliberately confusing?
[edit]Is this deliberately confusing? Look at the population of province boxes Ulster 294 294 what? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.191.237.229 (talk) 12:37, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
- As stated at the start of the section, "(Measured in 1000's)". Murry1975 (talk) 12:58, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Its still absolutely farcical to call cavan donegal and monaghan ulster, i think partition should be removed entirely from this article especially considering the biggest changes in population described in it happened before parition, and it is confusing when some parts of it talk about antrim or derry etc but other parts leave them out. - Surprise this still has not been rectified as the population statistics for Ulster are not in keeping with the rest of the article, which is about the population of the island of Ireland and not either of the two political entities that lie within it. As such, recording the correct population of Ulster makes sense to the article, especially prior to 1921. To avoid vandalism for political means, an asterisk placed on all subsequent decades after 1921 may be required, merely to point out that the population recorded is for the province as a whole and not Northern Ireland, nor the three Republic of Ireland counties. Not much analysis
[edit]Despite the name, not much analysis is presented. Is Wikipedia now just a raw data dump site? 84.250.167.86 (talk) 11:06, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Rankings and presentation of data
[edit]The presentation of the data in this article seems counterintuitive. County population statistics seem to be organised by their ranking as of 2011, yet this disregards the fact that censuses are taken in the Republic every 5 years and every 10 years in the North, and the fact that the Republic's next census has been pushed back until 2022, meaning that the population figures will be a year apart. This is to say that rankings may change between these non-concurrent censuses, complicating rankings. This organisation also makes it difficult to find specific counties. It might be more intuitive to list these figures alphabetically or even alphabetically by province? Eolas6041 (talk) 16:50, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
