- He wasn't a admiral, but a commodore. The Dutch were the first to install the rang of kommandeur, a temporaly rang between the rang of kapitein (captain) and the rang of Schout bij Nacht (rear admiral) for the time of an expedition. The English copied that, and named it commodore. Dutch greetings.
