John McKean was a marine engineer assigned to the former Marine 1, the George B. McClellan. While on a call in the harbour, the McClellan suffered a steam explosion, fatally injuring McKean. Since a new fireboat (the current) was on order, it was named after its late marine engineer killed in the line of duty. More info here Feel free to add this information to the article if you want.
