Designation as a farsa
[edit]I was surprised to see this down as a farsa and had a look in Grove. Richard Osborne says "Its designation as a farsa is misleading in the light of its semiseria status as a romantic melodrama with buffo elements." I wonder if the reason for calling it a farsa is because it only has one act? -- Kleinzach (talk) 00:07, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- That's probably true. It is actually designated a farsa but, as you say, it's closer to a short opera semiseria. This is already suggested in the Wikipedia article but if you want to make it even clearer, please go ahead. Maybe Rossini was contracted to produce a farsa so he called it that anyway in spite of its lack of comedy. --Folantin (talk) 09:13, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

- That's fine. There's more on the possible French influence in the booklet notes I have which I might add later. Does Grove have the cast list for the premiere? The only possible name I've got is Teresa Giorgi-Belloc as the heroine, but it's ambiguous from the context whether she was at the first performance or a later one. --Folantin (talk) 11:04, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Grove doesn't have any cast names but GT has been using a website with original Rossini casts. It's here [1]. -- Kleinzach (talk) 11:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. That site looks very handy. --Folantin (talk) 12:06, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
