Why did this become a terminus?[edit]

The article doesn't explain - and neither does the article on the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway - why the station was not turned into a through station? Instead it became a spur for a goods yard. I note that if the railway had continued north through Lancaster it would have crossed the River Lune at a much narrower point than the site that was required to build the actual viaduct.

It's an interesting that the effort to build this grand station came to nothing in less than 10 years. 81.141.39.134 (talk) 21:26, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose it wasn't continued northwards from this station because to do so they would have had to demolish much of the city centre. There would have been few (if any) buildings to demolish on the new route. -- Dr Greg talk 21:48, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
