settlement_type field

[edit]

For settlement_type field in communities:

  • "County seat" preferred over ("City" / "Town" / "Unincorporated community" / or many other community terms) and also preferred over CDP.
  • "City" / "Unincorporated community" / or other community terms are preferred over census-designated place (CDP), because CDP is not a common term and it's typically used ONLY for census related discussions.

In the intro, CDP should not be the first descriptive term for a community, instead city / unincorporated community / other community terms should be used first, then CDP afterward (if desired).

I don't think I've ever seen the term CDP or it's long form on common maps, which is a reason why it shouldn't be used as the primary way to describe a community.
