Latin American and Iberian Britons
[edit]I've removed that category, Gibraltarians are British Citizens, however Briton to me means someone from the British Isles, and Gibraltarians are from Gibraltar.
There is no category for say Iberian Spanish, because the correct classification there is Spanish People. --Gibnews (talk) 10:29, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah that's fair enough, now that you say it I don't see it was an appropriate category for Gibraltarians. --Gibmetal 77talk 17:39, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Mistakes
[edit]This list includes people that cannot be considered as Gibraltarians. Neither from a legal nor from an ethnic point of view. All the British subjects born in Gibraltar only because their parents were garrisoned in Gibraltar are uniquely British, and not Gibraltarians. It applies to Henry Francis Cary, Thomas William Bowlby, Frederick Stanley Maude, John Montresor, William Penney, Baron Penney and Peter Dignan and therefore should be removed. --Ecemaml (talk) 00:15, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
"Gibraltarian"
[edit]The legal term Gibraltarian may have been legally defined after the British takeover, but Wikipedia is not bound by legal definitions, and besides, it's hardly a NPOV situation to use legal definitions implemented by the victors, is it? Therefore I propose that this article should be moved to List of people from Gibraltar. If that is not agreed, I shall create a new article with that title to house anyone born in Gibraltar, which includes these Spaniards [1]. The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick t 18:59, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, I see List of people from Gibraltar directs here too. The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick t 19:00, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
- I believe this list was created with the intention of housing those people whom we would consider 'Gibraltarian' by today's standards rather than a repository for anyone and everyone who was born in Gibraltar. The problem with the latter, as I see it, is that is would potentially be huge and populated largely by the sons of servicemen who were were born in Gibraltar. However, if you really feel such article is necessary (I think a category should suffice), feel free to create it. RedCoat10 (talk) 19:12, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think it's necessary. I've added an extra section to this article, "People born in Gibraltar prior to British rule". The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick t 20:38, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
- Good idea. RedCoat10 (talk) 20:47, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
- Great. This is a shining example of what discussion can do and how an article can be made NPOV. BTW, I also added a statement about the people who lived in Gibraltar prior to 1704. You'd have thought from the opening sentence that there have been no other people living there. I avoided labelling them "Gibraltarian", despite my disagreement with you on the usage of that term.
