this is pathetic. Why are there not results and pages for each London Authority constituency?

Problem with No. of constituencies[edit]

When I first read the page of "London Assembly", it mentions that there are 14 constituencies in the Greater London; on the other hand, there are 32 London boroughs and the City of London as mentioned in the page of "Local Government in the United Kingdom". I don't really understand how does each constituency defined? It was then I found on the page "List of United Kingdom Parliament constituencies" has more than 14 constituenties for the region of "1.3 Greater London" and as the heading described, all are London boroughs (apparently over 33). I am afraid I have problem with the numbers of London boroughs and constituencies... Can anyone give me a clear picture on this issue? I would be thankful for your answers.

Here are some of the quotes from each pages:

London Assembly: "There are 14 constituencies"

Local Government in the United Kingdom: "London is then divided into 32 London boroughs and the City of London"

My second question is:

I suppose all constituencies elected are all members of the House of Commons. I read from the page "List of United Kingdom Parliament Constituencies" which mentions there are 646 constituencies which sit in the House of Commons and so I think all constituencies = members of the House of Commons. Also, the page of "House of Commons" mentions that there are 646 members in the HOC in 2005 and so the figures of the constituencies matches that of the members of HOC. But on the page of "London Assmebly", it mentions "In the time since its creation in 2000, six Assembly members have been elected to the House of Commons". I do not understand this since I suppose all 14 constituencies elected were all members of the House of Commons. Am I right? And the other 11 members who entered the London Assembly by the Additional Member System were just members of the Assembly, but not the members of the House of Commons as the constituencies do. Is this correct?

Quotes from the page are:

List of United Kingdom Parliament constituencies: "This is a list of the 646 constituencies currently represented in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom Parliament, as at the 2005 general election."

London Assembly: "In the time since its creation in 2000, six Assembly members have been elected to the House of Commons." &

House of Commons: "Since 2005, the British House of Commons has had 646 elected members."

I will be grateful for all of your answers~! scarlett_tong 15:40, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The simple answer is that Parliament, the London Assembly and the London boroughs are entirely separate tiers of government, all with differing numbers of seats. Some politicians serve at more than one level simultaneously, eg. two London Assembly members are currently MPs as well but have not resigned their assembly seats to avoid by-elections.
