Number of Games

There seems to be only 782 games in the list, but the introduction says it's 783. Which is the correct number? 83.251.226.172 (talk) 10:38, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

There are several links on this page that do not link to an article on the game, but instead to the game's origin (movie, TV show, etc) or to something totally unrelated. -- LGagnon

I've just disambiguated just about all of the links I think. I may have missed one or two but most of the articles that pointed to other material now point to "ARTICLE_TITLE (video game)". --TheDotGamer 04:13, Jan 29, 2005 (UTC)
I am currently exhaustively going through each section of games and correcting any game name links I find pointing to incorrect articles. I have not started through the Developer / Publisher lists yet. Dawynn (talk) 18:55, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Official List

There is an official list of North American Super Nintendo releases of video games at nintendo.com. Here is the address (http://www.nintendo.com/gamelist?category=classic) and specifically for SNES (http://www.nintendo.com/doc/snes_games.pdf), can someone compare it? I also have the list in a spread sheet format as well. --ShaunMacPherson 06:36, 12 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Good find. It's nice to have official info. Kil 20:42, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

List Update

The old text of the article is here: /previous list. fabiform | talk 17:16, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

List looks great! I will correct come of the links currently there by comparing to the old list. Everyone can help out too!

Thanks! --ShaunMacPherson 23:14, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I've forced the width of the first row of each table, they should all line up now. The "correct" way to do this would probably be to use a template, this way the percentages could be changed in one place. Also, the size of the article is now in excess of 32kb, this should be changed. --Commonchaos 19:39, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

7th Saga 2

I recommend reinstating the entry for 7th Saga 2. Although it wasn't originally released in the US or Europe, there is a third-party English translation that's available. There are numerous ROM translation projects out there helping to reintroduce Japanese RPGs (particularly on the SNES) to retro gamers, so I think it should be included. Just because it was only commercially available in Japan shouldn't really disqualify it from being considered in a list of SNES games.--Sonance 03:06, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Okay, I just noticed the blurb at the top of the list page. Ignore me! Although it might be a good idea to create a separate list of translated games.--Sonance 05:58, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Actually -- because it was only available in Japan *does* disqualify it from being in a SNES list. It would have been released for Super Famicom, not SNES. Furthermore, I would argue that ROM's created from copyrighted games are considered to be illegal things, unless you specifically create your own ROM's from your own legally owned game cartridges. The practice of letting folks know which games have been fan translated may be worthwhile, but it is a touchy subject. Also, it'd be a rather hard-to-document thing, keeping track of which games have been translated, which versions were used for the base of the translation, and which languages the games have been translated into. Dawynn (talk) 19:03, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

"Company"

what exactly does company refer to in the list? developer? publisher? --Philip Laurence 11:05, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

Redundancy

Is it just me or is this list redundant? Category:Super_NES_games has this list, and it is automatically updated. This list, and many like it are just asking to go out of date. The only difference is the inclusion of companies and release dates. There are usually several release dates and the company column goes between developer and publisher. Also, SNES game articles already link to Category:Super_NES_games anyways, and you would have to add links to this list for each one manually. --Greyhawk0 01:16, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

It may be. However, the common user should have a way of finding all the games ever released for the console, not just the ones with articles in Wikipedia (in example, it is easier for them to begin an article starting from this list, where they already have the name they need to use for the article, than starting a new one and forgetting to add the category, probably creating several entries about the same game). -- ReyBrujo 23:08, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
With some practical guidelines, I don't see how this list could go out-of-date. If we establish that this is a list of officially licensed, officially released versions of all SNES games, then we have a finite list. The SNES platform no longer sees any new officially licensed games, as Nintendo has stopped all such activity on this platform. I would argue that even unlicensed officially released games would be a very rare thing indeed, unless someone puts out a Beggar Prince, Pier Solar, or something similar new for the SNES system (why is Genesis suddenly getting attention again?).Dawynn (talk) 19:18, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

A Total of all the games on the page?

I would add it to the page myself, but I don't know what it is. I was looking for this number, but I have not been able to find it. Just in case I didn't make sense, what I'm talking about is the number of releases made, for example, something like "In the span of the console's life, there were X games released". --Puzzl 03:20, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Well, just counting the italicized lines
    curl -s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SNES_games|grep -c "<td.*<i>.*</i>"
    715
We should make sure the list is complete and accurate before reporting that number tho. Also, were there any games released under different names in Europe and America that might be counted twice? --Buuneko 08:24, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
In my exhaustive updates, I'll be checking for instances where the same games were created under different names in different reasons. I must add that I am indebted to Cowering (of GoodUtils fame) and Natch (of NSRT fame) in order to identify these. This is a multi-step process -- but I am trying to get this list as complete as possible. -- 24.179.250.61 (talk) 11:15, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Source consensus

Is there any consensus as to how an editor should verify the developer information on this list? For publisher info, Nintendo's .pdf is sufficient (although it does say "licensee", which is not always the same), but it seems there is no easy way to find verifiable developer info for two-generation old games. I've personally been using a combination of sources, such as gamefaqs, rottentomatoes, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Kil 18:14, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Doom

Is there a reason why Doom is not on this list? It was released for the SNES. Since I'm new here, I just wanted to make sure before I added it. --HumanZoom 07:22, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Dunno but it belongs here, so hopefully you've added it. Kil (talk)' 10:56, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok, so I added Doom to the list and linked it to this page (instead of the standard Doom page). Also, I got the release date from [here]. However, I noticed on some pages it lists GT Interactive as the developer for the SNES doom (as stated [here]). Can anyone confirm or deny this? I currently have it listed as developed by id Software.--HumanZoom 17:46, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Please do update any fields you feel reasonably certain about. As information from that period is hard to find and sometimes unreliable, the best way to get the list updated with correct info is probably through editors who are very familiar with particular games. Likewise, I don't know much about the Doom games, so I'm not sure whether it's GT interactive or ID software. Kil (talk) 18:11, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
This may be a case of the who developed the game (definitely id) and who ported the game to the SNES. I believe it should stay listed as id Software for the time being (since they are the creators of the original game and this is just a port). I have an original Doom SNES cartridge, but unfortunately I do not have access to it until later this week. I'll see whats on the actual cart. --HumanZoom 07:39, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok, problem solved. I was able to get ahold of the actual and it clearly states on the front it was created by id Software (as can be seen in the following image).
Sculptured Software was the developer of the SNES version of Doom. [here] is proof.

Williams Entertainment

I just noticed that all the Williams Entertainment links are red, when a page for Williams does indeed exist at Williams (gaming company). I updated the Doom link that I just added, but I don't have time right now to adjust the rest of the article. I will try to get to this ASAP (unless someone else beats me to it). --HumanZoom 17:46, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I think I repaired them all. Kil (talk) 18:20, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Don't merge the SNES and SFC lists!

There's still a notification on the SNES list about the suggestion to merge with the SFC list. This is a recipe for disaster. You don't want to take two huge, complex tables, each of which stands in its own right and quite possibly caters to different interest groups, and try to mash them together. Both lists would be ruined unless extreme painstaking care was taken to allow readers to visually screen out one or the other of the original lists. It'd be a nightmare. It's fine the way it is! Should we remove the notification of the suggestion? I'll do it myself if a few weeks go by with no replies here. Ecksemmess 22:41, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree. Each list has links to the other list. That should be sufficient for the curious. The only thing I can see that might cause some concern is the lack of quality indications as to which games are replicated between the two lists. (That is, for each game that was produced on both systems, which SFC system title translates to each SNES title) Dawynn (talk) 19:22, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
I split this page into multiple pages simply because of its size. Even as just a SNES list, it was taking too long to load. So, at this point, I'd be willing to reconsider merging the lists. Any second opinions? Dawynn (talk) 00:29, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Nevermind. After removing the region flags, things seem to be moving along quicker. We're just one big happy page again now. Dawynn (talk) 11:36, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

America only?

Why are some games listed as "America only" when they were released elsewhere? Just because Kirby's Dreamland 3 was released as Hoshi no Kaabii 3 in Japan doesn't mean it's a different game. If anything, alternate titles should be placed in parenthesis. Games should say "America (or other region) only" only if that is 100% true meaning it wasn't released under an alternate title or any other way.~ Dusk Knight 05:06, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

After thinking about it some more, I'm guessing "America only" means "not released in Europe". If that's the case, "America only" should be changed to "not released in Europe" or "not released in PAL regions" to avoid confusion.~ Dusk Knight 08:27, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I am exhaustively going through each region. The format of the various lists is changing to include a Region column. All references to "North America"-only or "Europe"-only are being removed in favor of flag indicators in the Region column to tell which regions are included. I will point out that I am not adding any Japanese flags as I am assuming that all Japanese titles are SFC games, not SNES games. In the meantime, I am also removing all emphasis on the North American game names. Each game will be listed under its Wikipedia title, no matter which region used that title. Differences in game names between regions will be noted in the Alternate Names title. All sections that have region flags at this point have been validated against a couple emulation-related resources. Eventually, I'll get back to checking these against the official PDF lists. It's a work-in-progress. Dawynn (talk) 19:28, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

List format on regions

Shouldn't be better that this list uses an extra column to indicate which regions the game was released for, as well as another to indicate any alternate name for the title? Something similar to the N64 list. In this case, however, none of the Japanese game would appear.

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Polo83 (talkcontribs) 13:55, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
See note above under "America Only?". Columns are being added, and Region information is also being added as my free time permits. Dawynn (talk) 19:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

What are the "SNES" indications on alternate titles?

Lots of alternate titles have "SNES" indications (similar to "NA" and "EU" indications). I'm guessing this is a remnant from some earlier revision. Should these be corrected? Also, perhaps one region should (perhaps arbitrarily) be chosen as the title to use for alpha-sorting when two are available. My gut suggests to use the NA titles whenever available, with the EU titles being alternates. Right now, the selection is just arbitrary. Would any of you EU guys get mad if I did this? (After I create an account, of course.) --38.99.212.18 (talk) 14:34, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

That's a lot of damage you've done there. Perhaps you could have waited to at least see if someone might come back from vacation to respond to you before you started obliterating the page.
If you had looked, the first column *was* the Wikipedia Main Title -- that is, how Wikipedia calls the game, even if it differed from what the game was called for this platform. Some games come out on a variety of platforms, and have different names on some of those platforms. For this page we had listed exactly how Wikipedia named the game, then if the game was released under a different name for SNES (generally for both EU and NA), then we would note that as "SNES". Meanwhile, if it only had a different name for one region, the alternate name was noted with that specific region code. I probably could have lived with this change, if you had just changed the first column name and moved the games to the appropriate alphabetical sections...
But you also destroyed the ability to edit this page in small alphabetical sections. Which also destroyed any ability for someone to use the alphabet index to jump directly to those sections. Maybe it was less convenient for you for this set of edits to have to deal with the various alphabetical sections, but it was far more convenient for everyone to have the separate sections when dealing with localized small edits. Why force Wikipedia to give me the whole page to edit, when I only want to change the production information on one game?
When planning large sweeping changes, please be considerate. Have extra patience during major holiday seasons, please. In case you were not aware, 11/27/08 was the Thanksgiving holiday season in the USA. Dawynn (talk) 14:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I have restored navigation functionality and tried to fix glaring issues. I'll deal with other corrections later. Dawynn (talk) 14:40, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

reference

some one needs to put the reference numbers next to every game like in list of NES games. (mahler) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mahler1780 (talkcontribs) 15:42, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Pointless, and painful. Someone has graciously listed a PDF containing a list of all of the SNES games under the "References". I would suggest that this would be the reference for *all* of the games, as long as they are listed in the PDF. (Sorry, haven't checked the PDF in a while -- feel free to verify) Any games not listed in the PDF would need references, but that would be a very small minority, I suspect. Dawynn (talk) 14:06, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I take it back. I can see where there would be benefit to making references to the information, if we can find a reliable source for everything. GameFaqs is a good start, although it may not be the best for some parts. Basically, we'd be looking for reliable resources for 1) the proper game names, 2) all the publishing information and 3) validation of alternate names and region releases.
While I see the benefit of adding this information, I *don't* see any benefit to just adding a reference column and then expecting others to fill in the references. If you're going to add the reference column, please also be willing to put in the time to fill it in. Dawynn (talk) 02:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Well there at least needs to be numbers for reference.mahler1780
(Moved mahler1780's comment because it seemed to fit better here) Dawynn (talk) 16:40, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

I guess we could add some numbers, but I don't see where that would really have any benefit for anyone. What would a set of numbers really accomplish? We'd actually need to attach meaning to the numbers. Again, I'm not against adding the references, but if you wish to do that, please take the time to add the links yourself.
Honestly, I'm scared of adding Wikipedia:References#Inline citations:inline citations and directing them to the documents. That looks nice in the main article, but then it gets really ugly down in the references area, and all of a sudden you'd have hundreds of back-tracing references finally followed by the actual document reference. Does anyone know of a way to tell Wikipedia not to add the backtracing links in the reference section? Dawynn (talk) 16:40, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
To see an example of what I'm talking about, go here and check out the references in each section. Now, imagaine instead of, say, 20 games all referencing one document, you had hundreds and hundreds of games all referencing the same document. Dawynn (talk) 17:04, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
So, I'm satisfied with the general references, which we already have.
To be frank, the NES games list has added links to the game information in GameFaqs, but they have not truly added references. We have, even if the references we added were simply general references. Were they to add true references to the gamefaqs links, there article would double in length -- one listing for each game in the main article, and a second listing for each individual reference page that they link to. We have provided necessary references, without unnecessarily expanding the size of our article. Dawynn (talk) 17:04, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

First Column Title

I came back from Thanksgiving break to see that there were some large sweeping changes done to the page. The Wikipedia Main Title concept was gone. Evidently it was too confusing. OK, I can live with that. But, now I'm having difficulty coming up with a proper name for the first column of this page.

Each article *should* be listed under the name used to introduce the game to the western world, regardless of platform. So, to me at least, "Title" for a game carries the exact same intended meaning as "Wikipedia Main Title". So, if we do away with one, we should do away with the other.

The user that changed the titles seems to have preferred listing the North American title in the first column. But I hesitate to put "North American Title" on the first column, because there are a number of games that were never released on the SNES in NA.

I've chosen "SNES Title" for now, although that truly doesn't do justice either. Because, if each game truly had a SNES title, there would be no need for the Alternate Title column. "English Title" isn't exactly usable either because many games were released under different titles in NA and Europe.

So, if anyone has a better idea for what to name the first column, please feel free to suggest. Now that we've moved away from the Wikipedia Title, I just can't find a name that I feel properly justifies what will be put in the first column. Dawynn (talk) 14:46, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

"Prehistorik" vs. "Prehistorik Man"

Someone had edited "Prehistorik Man" (Titus Software) to just "Prehistorik".

I went back to both of the referenced lists. Both the Nintendo official list (NTSC games) and the Pal list identify this specifically as "Prehistorik Man".

Then I went to the Titus Software Wikipedia page. According to this page, Titus Software published a number of games including "Prehistorik" (1981), "Prehistorik 2" (1983), and a third game titled "Prehistorik Man" (1986). There are Wikipedia pages for the first two, but not the third. As it turns out, it is this third game that was released for the SNES system.

Reading further, there is a note on the "Prehistorik 2" page indicating that this game was ported to the SNES as "Prehistorik Man". For this reason, I'll create a link to the "Prehistorik 2" page. However, the game name will not be changed.

Alternate titles, and columns in Lists of articles

I'd like to invite anyone contributing to this list to take part in a discussion we are currently having on the Talk:List of Nintendo 64 games#Removal of Alternate Titles and Number of Players where we are discussing the use of keeping alternate titles in the "List of...games" some have suggested that they take up too much space and that other columns could seem to be "useful only to fans", and other things that have been mentioned that, and other 'List of' talk pages. I think the alternate titles may be better as

Wikipedia Main Title Year Developer/Publisher Regions released Number of Players
1080° Snowboarding 1998 Nintendo/Nintendo JP, NA, PAL 1-4
64: Tenshi no Yakusoku 1999 Altron/Altron JP 1
AeroFighters Assault
Sonic Wings AssaultJP
1997 Paradigm Entertainment/Video System JP, NA, PAL 1-4
Michael Owen's WLS 2000
Mia Hamm 64 SoccerUSA
RTL World League Soccer 2000GER
Telefoot Soccer 2000FRA
2000 Silicon Dreams/THQ and SouthPeak Games NA, PAL 1-4

Please come and give your opinion, and hopefully keep these type of concerns from arising again and again at each "List of" pages. (Floppydog66 (talk) 21:11, 18 December 2008 (UTC))

3 games missing

Cannondale Cup and Chavez arn't on the list Jar0287 (talk) 06:24, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I removed these again, as they certainly are on the list. A simple find performed on this page found Cannondale Cup as an alternate title for Mountain Bike Rally. A find on the N-Z page found Chavez as an alternate title for Riddick Bowe Boxing.

multiplayer option

it would be great if there was a column showing multiplayer yes/no or players 1/2/3/4 - that would be very useful 134.99.38.61 (talk) 10:21, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

7 changes that need to be made to this page!

If Wikipedia's goal for their snes games page is to compile a "list of all officially released SNES games for all SNES markets", and to list "Any games not officially licensed by Nintendo" with a mark of (unl) they should:

1.Create an official entry for Chavez II: The game is in Spanish but it was released with NA/USA tags, and it’s listed in five other lists… http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/gameslist/manuals/snes_games.pdf http://www.vgrebirth.org/games/search.asp?platforms=12&regions=1&page=3 http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=136575 http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/list-c http://digitpress.com/lists/dplite_nintendo_snes.pdf

2.Create an unofficial (unl) entry for the Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge: If this Wikipedia list is willing to list the Star Fox Competition Cartridge it should also add the DK Comp Cart, and while you’re at it change the Star Fox game to a (unl) listing. Here are some other lists with the DK Comp Cart listed… http://www.vgrebirth.org/games/search.asp?platforms=12&regions=1&page=4 http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=136575 http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/list-d http://digitpress.com/lists/dplite_nintendo_snes.pdf

3.Mark the M.A.C.S game with a (unl) tag…

4.Create an official entry for the Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally/ Speed Racer Combo cartridge: and while you’re at it change the “Mountain Bike Rally” listing to “Extertainment Mountain Bike Rally… http://www.vgrebirth.org/games/search.asp?platforms=12&regions=1&page=5 http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=136575 http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/list-e http://digitpress.com/lists/dplite_nintendo_snes.pdf

5.Create an official entry for Super Bomberman Party Pak game: It appears to be an entirely different game than Super Bomberman and Super Bomberman 2, here’s more info about the game at the first two links following this paragraph… and the last two links following this paragraph are two websites that have it listed as an entirely different game as well… http://catalog.ebay.com/Super-Bomberman-Party-Pack-Super-Nintendo-/4910?_aset=2&_htch=1&_pcatid=2&_rptype=4295&_tab=1&_trksid=p4295.c0.m295&_adr=1 http://poweredbyrocket.mybisi.com/product/super-bomberman-party-pak--snes-in-box http://digitpress.com/lists/dplite_nintendo_snes.pdf http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=136575

6. Cannondale Cup and Mountain bike Rally should be separate entries (even though they are similar games). They’re in different languages, have different cartridge art, and different box art…

7. Riddick Bowe Boxing and Chavez should be separate entries (even though they are similar games). They’re in different languages, have different cartridge art, and different box art…

~After all these changes are made the official/unofficial NA/USA snes game total will increase from 720 to 726. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.94.203.99 (talk) 02:25, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

I made changes 1, 2, and 3. For 4, I added Mountain Bike Rally / Speed Racer, but left the Exertainment prefix off because the Official SNES Release List pdf from Nintendo lists the game simply as Mountain Bike Rally. (A scan from the inside of the manual pages from the game would probably confirm the "correct" name). I did not add the Super Bomberman Party Pak game, since I can't find a site that describes any hard differences. Did not touch 6 and 7 because I don't know how "similar" the games are. Different regions often have different translations and in some cases slightly different functionality but that doesn't mean we should separate them all right?

This added 2 items to the list. By my count this changes the total to 786: 63 EU-only, 251 NA-only, and 472 in both. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hornpipe2 (talkcontribs) 14:55, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Release date column

It is suggested that ISO 8601 is sometimes appropriate in tables. This article strikes me as a perfect example of where such usage could benefit (who writes "1994, June 1", anyway?). --Bxj (talk)

Column Merger Proposal

I propose merging the "SNES title" and "Alternate titles" columns into one Title column so that it looks more like the "Title" column on the List of Nintendo 64 games article. Any thoughts or suggestions? History Wizard (talk) 16:06, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

I went ahead and merged the two columns. History Wizard (talk) 00:06, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Why is there a picture of the American Super Nintendo Console but not the European? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JONNY1992UK (talkcontribs) 20:23, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Language of the games

Would it be interesting to say in what language was published every game? Because some are in English only, either PAL or NTSC, and others were published in English, French, English and Germany. This is interesting for to distinguish the original games from the fake repro games. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.52.107.54 (talk) 12:09, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Suggestion - Fix the date sort

Sorting by date is partially broken due to some games having only release years. The games with full dates sort correctly, but those with only years (or only a year and month) won't sort at all on that column.

Suggestions for how to fix this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bthylafh (talkcontribs) 01:07, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Change "Date of Release" to "Year of Release"? Yes of course you lose some information, but the article page for the game likely would have a full release date.68.81.53.251 (talk) 05:04, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
