Rename[edit]

Shouldn't this be moved to "List of cor anglais concertos", (a) because "cor anglais" is the usual name, and (b) to avoid being taken to mean "...horn concertos by English composers"? Rothorpe (talk) 16:56, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am inclined to agree, but for slightly different reasons. "Cor anglais" is the usual name in most English-speaking countries, but not in the United States. This problem has been discussed ad nauseam over on Talk:Cor anglais, where periodically American-biased editors have insisted that no-one in the entire English-speaking world calls the instrument "cor anglais". This has, I think, been laid to rest, since that article was originally written in UK English—the criterion for making decisions in most cases were region-neutral language is impossible to achieve. My argument for changing the title of the present article is precisely that the parent article is titled Cor anglais, not English horn. Your second point is perfectly valid, but points to an additional defect in the present title, which is the lack of a necessary hyphen in a unit modifier: in order to avoid just the confusion you point out, it should have been "List of English-horn concertos". One way or the other, the present title is untenable.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 20:31, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If "List of English-horn concertos" is grammatically correct and avoids confusion, let's move it there, but a move to Cor Anglais concertos seems inappropriate for a variety of reasons. Two of the most compelling ones are:
WP:ENGLISH's first guideline for a title's name is to use the term most common in English. There is no competition here. Google hits are an order of magnitude more common for EH than for CA (EH concerto 150,000, concerto for EH 81,200; CA concerto 15,900, concerto for CA 9,520). Googling books gives a 4:1 ratio.
Being a Dutch person used to play the "alto oboe", I created the article apparently in American English. As Jerome admits, the main reason that the page on the instrument is called cor anglais is WP:ENGVAR's section Retaining the existing variety, which applies here equally. I came here to raise a point---only to discover that I had already raised it, and there were two detailed replies! Thanks and apologies. (I know my watchlist is too big.) I've changed the text examples to 'English-horn concertos', and agree that the article should be similarly renamed. Rothorpe (talk) 00:50, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Either that, or the article content should be changed to reflect the fact that the title refers to horn concertos from England ;-).—Jerome Kohl (talk) 01:23, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved the page to "List of concertos for English horn" to avoid the confusion. Wish that people had stuck with the original and much more romantic "angel's horn". Afasmit (talk) 04:13, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
