Breaching the manual of style
[edit]I think if this article is going to breach Wikipedia:Manual of Style (flags)#Do_not_rewrite_history, I think it should be clearly stated in the article why this is being done. Fasach Nua (talk) 18:19, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- I would suggest that all flags be removed from this list, replaced by another column in the table, indicating the county (and province?) of birth. That should be acceptable to all, I would hope. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:48, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't object to flags for the teams, I do object to flags to distinguish between the nationality of Irishmen playing for Ireland. If the differentiation between RoI and NI is to be made the difference between, IFS and Ireland(FAI) should be made, as this is why the dual internationals is so heavily skewed to have so many southern born players. - What about a column to indicate eligibility? Fasach Nua (talk) 10:48, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

The Ulster Banner shouldn't be used at all in these articles as they deal with the period prior to 1950, the Ulster Banner didn't exist until 1953.--Padraig (talk) 15:41, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- Flags are used to identify players nationalities throughout Wikipedia and in conjunction with their national teams. Why is this article so different ? The article is dealing with a nationality issue so the flags are appropriate. Other editors should be aware that Fasnach Nua is carrying over a dispute from Ireland national football team (IFA) to this page. Djln--Djln (talk) 15:06, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- I think what makes this article different from most is that using flags for nationality is awkward because none of those players were born when Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland existed. They were all born in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Neither of those two flags existed when these players were born. A similar situation existed with List of Yugoslavia national football team goalscorers, where an older edit used flags for modern-day nations (Croatia, Serbia, etc.) to indicate the "nationality" of the individual Yugoslavian players. I removed the flags there for the same reason I support removal of the flags here. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:22, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
