England's westernmost settlement Lat/Long[edit]

The latitude and longitude given, 49°53′N 6°21′W, is in the middle of the Lethegus Rocks, about ½ mile off the main island of St Agnes; the OSGB reference on the GeoHack page, SV 87575 07272, apparently accurate to 1 metre, points to the same place and has obviously been found by conversion of the lat/long, not independently.

Surely the correct location is Troy Town on main island of St Agnes, which my map reading gives at about OSGB36 SV 87574 08065, which is at 49° 53′ 25.58″ N, 006° 21′ 02.36″ W. The problem would seem to be the rounding in the lat/long, which has dropped nearly half a minute of arc of latitude, or about half a mile.

Looking at the other items on the list, they are all rounded to 1 minute of arc. Surely a more accurate location, to say 1" of arc, should be given, implying accuracy of ± 15 metres for latitude and ± something in the range 8-10 metres for longitude, depending on the latitude. The GeoHack grid reference, being to 10 digits, implies accuracy within 1 metre, or a lot more accurate than 1" of arc, but at least using that accuracy you will find the correct location and not end up in the sea!

This would seem to be a matter of principle. Discussion, please. If there is general agreement, how do we get the matter of roundings addressed generally? Exbrum (talk) 10:15, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
