Page Name[edit]

Due to a typing error there is a naming problem. This page should be, "IT Acronyms" The page currently titled, "IT Acronyms" redirects here. The page currently titled, "IT acronyms" redirects here.

The redirects and extra pages should be deleted.

There is an older redirect that goes to an unrelated page, "List of computing and IT abbreviations." This page is truly a separate topic, because computer abbreviations and IT acronyms have minimal overlap, and the value and format of the "IT Acronyms" page is considerably different. The "IT Acronyms page has a reference to the computer abbreviations page in the second paragraph.

This page is meant as a key source both for students studying for any of the professional certification exams (CCNA, etc) and for people in the IT field. It is needed because the majority of the acronyms do NOT take a user directly to a page that answers the question, "What is this acronym?" Also, even after getting to the correct page or the the correct bookmark, it can take some time to learn the simplest thing about the term, such as what layer it is on, or if it is a standardized protocol or proprietary, and what is the primary reference source for the term.

The table is sortable on three columns, which is a valuable feature to find acronyms that may be related or in a related area of IT.

The left column in the table provides a direct link to the RELEVANT wikipedia page or bookmark (not obvious in most cases). The far right column attempts to provide the single most definitive and current (i.e. "Normative") quality reference outside of Wikipedia.

Caps[edit]

Kbrose, why the caps? Things like CSMA are often associated with a capitalized form for defining the acronym; yet 50% of uses in sentence context in books are downcased (many being upper due to the acronym following). See ngrams. Same with most of the others. If you don't have evidence that they are proper names, there's no reason to assume they are or treat them as such. CSMA and CDMA are no more proper names than TDMA, FDMA, or other multiple-access methods. Dicklyon (talk) 04:08, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
