Cello and piano

[edit]

Aren't solo pieces the same thing (basically) as compositions for cello and piano? There seems to be another separate page, List_of_compositions_for_cello_and_piano, for that. Hmm... interesting. Shouldn't the two be merged? Flcelloguy 13:36, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Very belatedly - no, I had in mind true solo pieces (continuo is a touchy point *g*) - Bach, Bloch, Reger cello suites, Ysaÿe, Kodaly, Wellesz (someone should make a CD of that, the LP was good...) cello sonata... cello and piano work page was misnamed (hrm, time for a redir?...) - for cello with accompaniment (usually piano or harpsichord but sometimes, as with Dupré and Rheinberger who also did write a sonata with piano, organ... ([1] reviews a disc of some cello and organ music, also. And cello and harp, for instance a work or two by Edmund Rubbra for that instrumentation, and I think a duo by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco also. And a Gubaidulina work for cello and accordion, if memory serves. And etc.) Schissel : bowl listen 06:49, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
The distinction is a valid logical one, BUT it is virtually useless. A sonata, specifically from a piece of music with the specific nomen of a sonata would cover MOST if not all of these lists. Merging would be a correct method especially when the distinction of a solo cello sonata or sonata with cello and fill in the blank instrument is what most of the outside world and most musicians, including myself, do. Keeping these seperate only creates more lists with no specific reasoning. Should we not merge these?Coal town guy (talk) 17:24, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I know this discussion was from a while ago, but I am here now because I am specifically looking for a list of pieces for unaccompanied cello. EvanED (talk) 02:09, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Italics

[edit]

The titles of all the pieces should be in italics. Hyacinth 07:01, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I base my statement that this is not so, on this section of the relevant manual of style. I realize I can be rigid, but Gilbert and Sullivan had it right this time (if everything's... well, you know the line.) Schissel | Sound the Note! 17:45, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yuriy Leonovich

[edit]

I deleted Leonovich and his work from this list, because he is an insignificant cello student who happens to compose and think highly of himself. He immediately reverted it (conflict of interest!), so I'd like to get consensus before deleting it again. I simply don't think he fits on this list with all of the great composers. Thoughts? 129humility 15:50, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Passacaglia - Theme and Variations by Handel

[edit]

This piece has been deleted twice. But there is indeed a solo cello version of the Passacaglia as I have the printed music in front of me at this moment. There is a recording of it here [2] (CD2 number 14) played by the well known cellist Tim Hugh. It is an extremely difficult piece and even the recording does not play all the Variations. The recording says it was "arr. Halvorson" my music says it in Russian arranged by Дынова (My russian is not very good) Swanstone 19:18, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hindemith Solo Sonata

[edit]

The latest New Grove dates the Hindemith as 1923. Where does the 1919 date come from? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jleathwood (talkcontribs) 15:09, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up / notability?

[edit]

It seems to me that a huge number of pieces here are absolutely unnotable: I.e. Were written by a composer without a wikipedia article, have never been released on any record label, have never had the sheet music published, only performed once, etc. What are the criteria for inclusion on the list? I mean, obviously we can't include everything ever written for solo cello, because then I (with no composition training) could scribble some whole notes on a paper, write about it on my blog, then list myself here, and obviously that would be no good. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.2.51.248 (talk) 05:34, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So let me see if I follow your logic, you claim that IF a composer is a red link, they are NOT notable and hence a solo piece for cello of theirs should not be placed on the list. BECAUSE, the red link must mean the composer is not notable????? So, we should assume that Wikipedia is perfect, and hence, if its not in Wikipedia, its not notable...Thats odd.....Coal town guy (talk) 15:50, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question concerning Transcriptions

[edit]

Do we also list famous transcriptions for the cello? Paganini etc etc come to mind, the Caprice 24 (not 100 certain of number)?Coal town guy (talk) 14:12, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]

I propose that List of solo cello pieces be merged into Cello sonata. A solo cello piece is usually, a sonata. Those pieces that are for a solo cello can be noted as such within the main sonata listCoal town guy (talk) 17:01, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Considering issues of article length, I don't think it's a good idea. Toccata quarta (talk) 23:01, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
could you clarify? Do you mean too many entries? Or, if we use the table format in the sonatas article, why not? The sonatas article is also doubling a number on entries...one has the piece and then, same article, chronology of the piece, in a table....Coal town guy (talk) 01:29, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
