needs some work, eh...
[edit]Where to start!
Although the Paul Young version is just the latest in a long line of covers, it's being treated as the main entry here, including the previous/next chart hit link boxes, details of the single with its B-side, etc. Should be split off to a different entry from the one for the original song itself.
Sticking with Paul's version, there's no mention of how he "re-interpreted" it into what I assume is its rather different arrangement, or much other useful detail. EG, comparing to the only other one I have heard - John Denver's, from his debut album - and assuming that one is accurate to the original, Young's is much faster (and in my opinion all the better for it; it's quicker even than Denver's soporific dirge* played at 45rpm, yet still quite laid back... I found a load of old vinyl recently which is what led me here in the first place :) and has significantly different instrumentation and backing vocals from the original acoustic guitar, simple 4/4 drums and unobtrusive male voice choir. I was actually hoping to find out what they were as I can't quite place the ethnicity of either... african, native american, somewhere else? And if there's any significance to that? (unfortunately my PY copy is on a compilation with very little information supplied)
--- * so sleep inducing that he seems to drift off himself at a couple of points and misses out words and part of sentences. And this on the first track of his debut album 9_9 (yes, I did make sure the needle wasnt skipping)
And for the song in general, what's with the reference to homelessness? Part of the entire point of the song is an encouragement that so long as you have your family home about you, any hardship can be endured. The subject of this tale may have holes in their clothes, shoes and their house's roof (and the top of their milk urn), but they do have somewhere to go back to, to warm up and dry off, to huddle together with their family and "a warm conversation" to stick out the winter, unemployment and watery milk. Heck, they're even keeping their chin up enough to go to some kind of party.
Someone got the relevant info and godly powers of page-splitting to fix and fill-in this mess plz? I'm going to zap the homelessness bit myself (make it joblessness?) but that's about as far as my abilities go :( 193.63.174.10 (talk) 13:15, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Sandy Posey
[edit]Hello everyone. The article says that Sandy Posey released her version in 1970. That is incorrect. She recorded the song for her eponymous third studio album "Sandy Posey" which was released by MGM Records on August 26, 1967. So this need to be corrected.
