Title and Language
[edit]@Ehrentitle: As you had asked me I had a look on this article and I think that it is correct in general. Before I will start with some smaller edits and additions I would like to discuss one point. Do we want to keep this English title or should we take the German name as we did with Kaiserliche Marine, Reichsmarine, Kriegsmarine etc.? I think that this translation is a monster and hardly understood by English speaking people but you can judge that better than me. Also this word by word translation does not really offer the correct meaning of the German title. Even in German the word Hauptverwaltung has to be explained to people not familiar with the former East German administration. In their language a Hauptverwaltung was a department of a ministry in the Government. I don't think that anyone will link the term main administration to this function. Also from my understanding of naval terms I would prefer to use maritime police instead of sea police. It's just more common to say so. Therefore, my proposal is to move the article to Hauptverwaltung Seepolizei and to explain this title at the beginning of the article. But I will not move the article before you concur.
What I will do is to check the article for proper terms with respect to naval and maritime expressions and for some factual errors. Please let me know how you think about my proposal. --KuK (talk) 15:22, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
KuK Edits
[edit]@KuK: Thank you for your edits, they were exactly what the article needed since my translation from German was somewhat lacking as is my knowledge of German naval terms.
As for the article title, I originally created the article as Hauptverwaltung Seepolizei and then redirected to Main Administration Sea Police. So if someone searches on the German name in the English version of Wikipedia it will take them to the article. Main Administration Sea Police is what Douglas Peifer used in his book “The Three German Navies; Dissolution, Transition, and New Beginnings, 1945-1960", when referring to this organization. But I wouldn't be opposed to changing the title to just "Seepolizei" without Hauptverwaltung. Ehrentitle (talk) 18:56, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for this info. I haven't been aware that there is a book with this title. But I agree with you that Seepolizei probably will be the best solution.--KuK (talk) 09:58, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
