Rationale for substantial revision

[edit]

The article’s category reference was transferred from Category:Agriculture to Category: Agriculture in the United States, presumably because of US content, although the topic actually pertains to agriculture in many countries. Under References, the article states: “This article incorporates public domain material from the Congressional Research Service document ‘Report for Congress: Agriculture: A Glossary of Terms, Programs, and Laws, 2005 Edition’ by Jasper Womach.” No other reference is cited. The cited source is problematic in some respects. The article (like the source) states that the marketing year is a 12-month period, but that generalization does not apply to all US agricultural commodities, including several seasonal, perishable fruits and vegetables, according to USDA usage. The US marketing year indicated for corn, soybeans and sorghum in the cited source is incorrect and has been corrected in the article, but without citing a source for the corrected information. Marketing year information for many commodities is omitted. No marketing year information is included for countries other than the US. In order to incorporate more comprehensive information, a change in format would seem appropriate, in addition to citation of other sources. Because nearly all of the present content is simply text copied verbatim from the CRS document, such an edit will necessarily involve virtually complete replacement of the article’s present wording, although most of the present substance pertaining to the US may be unchanged, but augmented by several additions. With such editing including information for several countries, reversion to Category:Agriculture will be appropriate. Schafhirt (talk) 19:56, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
