Notability
[edit]I placed a 'speedy delete' tag ({{db-person}}) on this page, as I could not see that it made any claim of notability for de Féraudy. User:WereSpielChequers removed the tag, with an edit comment saying "(decline speedy - actor and songwriter)" and no other changes to the page.
Please explain, WereSpielChequers, under which of the criteria in Wikipedia:Notability (people) de Féraudy is notable. I have not found any reliable sources about him (I believe that IMDB is not counted a reliable source for Wikipedia, though I can't now find where I read that: in any case, it cannot be a source for establishing notability). There is a reference in the New York Times (1922) but it is just a passing mention, not a significant reference.
My brief research suggests that while he clearly existed, there are not significant references, and therefore he is not notable and should be deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 19:22, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'm afraid my French is pretty terrible, which French Film and drama sources from the twenties did you check? ϢereSpielChequers 23:25, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I haven't checked any, and yes there may be such. But you haven't pointed to any prima facie evidence that he is notable. It seems to me that the burden of proof is on the person claiming notability. --ColinFine (talk) 23:52, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Actually this isn't about notability. The threshold for speedy deletion under {{db-person}} at WP:CSD is that the article "does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability." "The criterion does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source" I would agree that IMdb is not an ideal source to use, and we have recently had an AFD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of actresses in the MILF porn genre where I was one of those arguing against using it for negative info on living people; However this chap is long dead and the info is scarcely negative. As for whether the article claims importance or significance, looking at IMDB his chief notability seems to have been as a film director, the article also asserts his writing of a famous song and being "dean of a major theatre" (though I'm not sure what that means). But I read the article as making far more claims of importance or significance than the typical {{db-person}} article of "xxx and yyy are the new happening thing on Bridlington's Gothic punk scene - they are currently unsigned but will be releasing their first LP early next year". PS When you tag an article for speedy deletion it is usually considered polite to inform the article's author. ϢereSpielChequers 09:54, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- OK, I see. I hadn't spotted the difference of 'notability' vs. 'importance' - but I do think that 'actor and songwriter' is not enough explanation for removing the speedy. And I did consider informing an author, but there were five non-bot editors with six edits in the history, so I didn't reckon any of them stood out as 'the' author.
- I got to the page from Fascination, and noticed the widely different date given for the song; I was going to fix it, but then I saw that the article was unreferenced, and a google search didn't show me any obvious reliable sources. You've declined my speedy, which I now accept. But I'm still wondering about notability. You've added a couple of cats, but no references. --ColinFine (talk) 23:33, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

I gather from the following (http://www.tabacollector.com/inspiration/figures/jacob/de_feraudy.htm) that he was the subject of a pamhplet in 1901 which had songs in it, hence the mistaken date for Fascination. It would be good to use the photograph too, I gather it was the one on the pamphlet when he was 42 years old, smoking a pipe. DDB (talk) 22:37, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- OK this guy was my great-great uncle, so I know a fair amount about him.
He was generally known as one of the great French actors of the day and being the dean of the Comédie Française does make him rather notable. He is listed in the Larousse encyclopedia.Feraudyh (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 15:48, 16 September 2011 (UTC).
