There are problems in geography with this article and Morrisania, which both claim similar borders. In addition, the article claims the Hafen Building as part of Melrose, but then states the southern limit of the neighborhood is East 149th Street. The photo of the junked cars is not indicative of the neighborhood. I suggest changing it to a photo of the new housing construction going on there, for example the one that is on the overall Bronx article now. The Interloafer 00:40, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. The Melrose section of the Bronx is very poor, vacant lots and stripped cars are unfortunately a common site. I feel the photograph has a justifiable presence. Adding a bunch of photographs of renderings does not accurately reflect a community largely of vacant lots, low income public housing projects, tenements, and older run down homes. I agree with The Interloafer. This article talks a lot about what Melrose used to be without current supporting facts. The recent urban renewal of Melrose is as much indicative of the neighborhood as its former shortcomings. The photo needs to come down seriously. there are no trashed vacant lots in Melrose at all. The FEW vacant lots in melrose are already being developed. Melrose is not desolate and i have yet to see a stripped car in this area in the last 5 or more years. To say that the community is largely of vacant lots and desolate is baffling to someone who lives here and there is not one place in the area that is desolate...the commentor must have been looking at photographs of the area 10 yrs ago and has not obviously been there recently. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.199.250.42 (talk) 18:45, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

¶ I also think that the stripped, decimated car needs to be replaced with an image that represents the area much more faithfully--including all of the urban renewal and gentrification currently taking hold in Melrose. On another note, the article says that Melrose's northern border is E. 161st Street. My understanding is that Melrose extended north of 161st St. Does anyone have verifiable data on this? ~~

Gentrification is not happening in Melrose. Local working families are buying into affordable housing that is being constructed. The area is still very poor and there are still a good number of vacant lots and vacant residential units. A good number of affordable housing units are being constructed but the area was so decimated over the years by arson and abandonment it will take some time to fill in every lot. Also most of the existing housing in the area is in run down condition which is why so much new housing is a necessity. The overall neighbourhood is very run down looking. Unfortunately today the real estate market has declined and many projects have been put on hold or are no longer being planned. plus press release statements like "two state-of-the-art juvenile detention centers. Characterized by locks on the doors and other hardware designed to restrict the movement of the residents and protect public safety, the facilities were planned with staff input to enhance residents' overall security, while allowing for quality programming." As a 25 year resident of the neighborhood, I have seen both the old and new Melrose. While the originally posted pictures depicted the area a long time ago, the area has definitely improved for the better. It is not merely low income housing as there is a mix of multifamily private homes, condos and middle income developments in the area. The building posted in the top photo is no longer there; that area it is currently under construction with Boricua Village, a mixed-use commercial and residential development that will house a Boricua College building and retail. Supporting developments like the Gateway Center and the New Yankee stadium have also helped drive business in the area. Ecuaricans (talk) 04:23, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
