Images
[edit]Whilst I am glad that some images have been added to the article, they lack context for anyone who is not intimately familiar with the layout of Adelaide (I am, and still find it very difficult to work out what area they are representing). What the article needs is an overall map of the proposed highways. If a detailed map of the total proposed network could be found, or if there are enough images from which to reconstruct the whole plan, I'd happily whip up a graphic when I get some time.
Also, while we're on the subject of the images, what's their fair use status? It looks like they've been photographed off a microfiche screen. Are we allowed to use these images?--Yeti Hunter (talk) 08:43, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
- I reckon they would be fair use because they are not freely replaceable, enhance the article significantly, etc. He will probably get harassed by a bot soon enough for it though Muzzamo (talk) 09:27, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Brumby comment
[edit]Suggest the reference to the backwater comment be removed. The offending paragraph is offering new analysis of historical events as compared to contemporary issues, and is thus original research. It also has a whiff of anti-Adelaide (or perhaps pro-development) POV about it. --Yeti Hunter (talk) 05:17, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Plausibility of the construction and development of images in street-directory form?
[edit]For those who may find the layout depicted in the images confusing, would it be worth somehow displaying the original segments of the plan over a street directory scan? This would serve a number of purposes; for one, it would put the plan as seen in the images in a context easier for casual viewers of the article to identify with; and two, it would serve an educational purpose as a way of comparing the past to he present (for example, we would be able to see where in the Adelaide of today the Hindmarsh Interchange etc. would have gone). However, would this infringe copyright? Or, would its fair use for educational and historical purposes be enough to satisfy a street book display?
- I think it's a good idea, but it would be a lot of work, at least if you wanted to do something more than simple lines over an existing map...--Yeti Hunter (talk) 15:34, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- That's true. Not to mention, the Gregory's and UBD directories used in Adelaide are not drawn to scale, with roads and streets being mapped disproportionately wide to accommodate the names of streets. But it would look alright if it could be done somehow.
Selloff
[edit]"By the 1980s, road reserves and land gazetted for future use in MATS projects had been progressively sold off by various governments" - is that true? I thought the selloff wasn't until the project was formaly terminated by the Bannon Government in 1983. e.g. this ref[1] - "In 1970 the MATS plan was suspended and finally abandoned in 1983. For all this time however, Brompton and Bowden wavered..." Peter Ballard (talk) 03:13, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Legacy
[edit]The article is equivocal about the outcomes of the MATS plan. The introduction says flatly, "Ultimately none of the plan's recommendations were brought to fruition". However, the article goes on to say that the existing Southern Expressway, Port River Expressway and O-Bahn are all derived from, or descended from, elements of the plan. Shouldn't the summing up in the introduction be a little less absolute in dismissing the legacy of the MATS plan? Peter Bell (talk) 03:19, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
