A more complete history

[edit]

There are a few errors in the current article, most notably that the church was built in 1766. The addition of the steeple occurred in 1863, which could account for this being the date given for initial construction.

A complete history from founding to 1970 can be found in electronic form here: http://mipchurch.org/history/bayles.html. This is "A History of the Middle Island Presbyterian Church 1766-1970" by Thomas R. Bayles, a local historian whose collection is housed at Longwood Public Library, Middle Island, NY. It is published but not widely available.

Elbert Clayton Smith (of the Smith family who owned the whole Patent of St. George, now Brookhaven Town) was a member of MIPC and donated the land the current church sits on. Originally it was built as an Education Building, but was added on to and became the permanent church home. Incidentally, Smith also donated the land that Longwood Jr. High and High schools sit on, and part of the deal was to change the name of the school district from "Middle Island" to "Longwood" (named after the Longwood estate, which was the part of the original Patent that Smith inherited). --Kevin F. The church building was constructed in 1837 according to multiple sources cited. I fixed the article to state this (although the original Presbyterian congregation was founded in 1766). Feel free to add further detail to the article if it is sourced. Thanks for pointing out some of the problems. Swampyank (talk) 20:35, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
