[edit]I don't have any citations for this, but I overheard it from someone claiming to part of the group who purchased the lighthouse. He said that the group purchased the light, and then sold it to the state of South Carolina for $1. The reasoning was that they couldn't get federal money to help with the preservation if it was privately owned. They then took out a very long lease on it so that they would still be the caretakers. Supposedly they have sequestered a good deal of money to help in renovating and shoring up the foundation of the lighthouse.
Interestingly, he also mentioned that it leaned a little towards the sea. Can't remember exactly how much, but on the order of 36" from plumb.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.7.17.3 (talk • contribs)
