Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph
[edit]I removed the entry on an Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph with the edit summary Not mentioned in List of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Iry-Hor has reverted my edit, and made various edits on this entry, including one with the edit summary IT IS IN THE LIST ! Look for "V30" in the page. I did look at List of Egyptian hieroglyphs, and 'neb' does not appear there. Gardiner sign V30 is listed, but not as 'neb':

It is entirely possible that 'neb' is an alternative transliteration to 'nb'. If you have a reliable source to confirm this then please add this to the list article, citing your source. Until then we should not have this disambiguation item here.

- Verbcatcher, vowels do not exist in Ancient Egyptian, for which only the consonants are written (like modern hebrew). Proper transliteration of V30 is nb, while transcription of it is "neb" (in the vast majority of cases, the neutral "e" is added as vowel so as to be able to read the texts, e.g. Neferefre is really nfr.f Rˁ and was clearly not read Neferefre but possibly more like "Nafarariya" by the Ancient Egyptians). This is visible in most pages about pharaohs whose name incorporated V30 sign, see e.g. Nebra (Pharaoh) (you will need to click on the [show] button next to royal titulary in the info box). This appears also in pages of private individuals Perneb, Nebwawy etc., as well as in the standard formula "nefer netjer neb tawy" (the good god lord of the two lands), see an example here on the Brookly museum (you will notice the tag "neb tawy" on the webpage of the museum). Any book on reading hieroglyphs can serve as reference here, including that of Gardiner where V30 is listed. Iry-Hor (talk) 08:30, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
- Iry-Hor, thanks for your reply. I am still dubious that that should be included. MOS:DABPAGES says that disambiguation pages are to help readers find the right Wikipedia article for a search term, and there appears to be no article that discusses this use of 'neb'. However, it is conceivable that one day there might be an article on this hieroglyph, so we might include it on this basis.
