TOO MANY LINKS! I'm going crazy[edit]

Every other word links to an article... SAILOR? HE? 3+ links to Ptolemy? C'mon.

Greek[edit]

Simoundou or Simundu (pronounced Silundu),

In the source, Malte-Brun says Simoundou/Simundu should probably be read Silundu, which, I would assume, means that he believes Simoundou to be a misspelling for Silundu. The ancient Greeks put less value on consistent spelling than people from eras of widespread access to dictionaries.--Kineticman (talk) 16:19, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Derivation from Sinhala vs. derivation from Cherala[edit]

The article as it is now has a single section for names derived from Sinhaladwipa and Ceralamdivu (or cognates thereof), which seems to claim that the former derives from (and/or is a cognate of) the latter.
As far as I know, Sinhala and Chera/Kerala have different unrelated origins. If that is correct, we should divide the section into separate sections for names originating from the former and the latter (and perhaps another for names which, as far as it is known, could have originated from either).
(Actually, there's already a section for Sinhala, so we could just move the Sinhala stuff there, and leave the Cherala stuff in the other section.)
And, of course, if - which I find unlikely, but can accept - the two names are, in fact, related, we should clarify it more precisely (and give some actual decent source for the relation).

The topic is poisoned because the two ethnic groups treat the question of etymology as a battlefield. The article needs to take extra care to only cite serious philological publications as reliable sources, and treat political stuff as political. --dab (𒁳) 12:33, 8 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lakdiva vs Lakdiva[edit]

Lak-diva in E'lu (old Sinhala) means the island of Lanka. Another traditional Sinhala name for Sri Lanka was Lakdiva, with diva also meaning "island".
