Please note that Nothobranchius aff. taeniopygus is not a species name (contrary to Nothobranchius taeniopygus, which is a recognized species). Instead it's taxononical status is unknown but the taxon has an affinity to Nothobranchius taeniopygus – as hinted by the "aff." i.e. species affinis remark. In layman's terms: "We found this fish that we can't yet name, but it looks really similar to Nothobranchius taeniopygus and is probably related to it." Hence Nothobranchius aff. taeniopygus is more of a placeholder name until further scientific proof can pinpoint it's place within the nomenclature.
This also means that (as with all "aff." names) "Nothobranchius aff. taeniopygus" is not a proper taxon name, since the same epithet can be used for several different groups of organisms waiting to be examined. The particular group mentioned by this Wikipedia article may turn out to be identical to Nothobranchius taeniopygus (in which case the "aff." is removed), or it may turn out to be an entirely new species (in which case it must get a new, different name since Nothobranchius taeniopygus is already occupied). –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:13, 12 August 2021 (UTC).[reply]
