References
[edit]I corrected the facts in this article to match those published in two reliable sources: The Detroit Free Press newspaper, and the Smithsonian National Musuem of American History. Both agree that Dan Robbins invented Paint-by-Numbers. If someone feels this is an error they need to find a published reference that agrees.

Paint by Numbers was invented by Palmer Paint Co. and its artist Dan Robbins together. There are several earlier sources such as Time Life Books 1970. In fact, both Palmer and Dan are credited in Trivial Pursuit Genius Edition.

Leonardo Da Vinci
[edit]Perhaps something should be mentioned about Leonardo's use of this technique in teaching and it being the inspiration for the modern kits, I saw this mentioned in a documentary some time ago which I can't recall, but this is the first ref that came up on google here relating it. Though it is interesting that it notes there were earlier examples from the 1920s but marketed for children, though unfortunately it doesn't go into any detail on that. There's also information about collectors and some notable examples, for instance a PBN 'Abstract Number One' with Robbins' signature which sold for $1000 and was displayed in a Smithsonian show.Number36 (talk) 20:37, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Specifically, a) Robbins repeatedly cited da Vinci, b) art historians disagree (https://hyperallergic.com/417802/your-paintings-are-numbered/) that da Vinci ever did this. DS (talk) 14:27, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Needs example images
[edit]This article really needs some representative images for a typical PBN image. Bod (talk) 21:27, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
