Engineering the ecosystem

" It is considered to be an ecosystem engineer and plays an important part in its biodiverse community." I sense interesting information lurking behind these linked statements, which is not presented in the text, however. I surmise that the "ecosystem engineering" in this instance is a by-product of filter feeding. What is its specific role in the biodiverse community, and how is that important?
