Paul’s father

Hello Wikipedia editors,

My maiden name was Rosemary Buckmaster and I am Paul Buckmaster’s sister.

I have just created this Wikipedia account, as I would like to request your assistance in correcting a major error in the information about our father, which was introduced by Adam Sweeting’s obituary of Paul in the Guardian (November 2017), now also used as a source here in Wikipedia.

The error is that our family has no connection to John Buckmaster, the son of Gladys Cooper. I have sent an email to Adam Sweeting at his Guardian email address on 9 June, asking him to correct his online obituary but have not yet received a reply. Therefore, I hope corrections can be applied directly in Paul’s page here at Wikipedia, as it is partially wrong and misleading.

Our father, John Caravoglia Buckmaster (son of actor-manager Charles Buckmaster, of Italian ancestry), was born in London on 25 October 1914 and started out as a young actor in the 30’s. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the London Scottish regiment, where he served with Bruce Copp, another English actor. Our father saw action in North Africa, then north into Sicily and finally in and around Naples, during late 1943 and early 1944. There he met our mother, a young concert pianist named Ermenegilda (“Gilda”) Maltese (born 4 December 1918), during a production of “Madama Butterfly” at the newly restored San Carlo Opera House. The story of how our parents met was told in Bruce Copp’s book: “Out of the Firing Line… Into the Foyer” (pages 67-69).

They married in Naples on 15 August 1945 and, after the war, made their home in Earl's Court, London. Their three children, Paul, Rosemary (me), and Adrian were all born in London. Our father continued to have small acting jobs until our mother died on 5 September 1989. In 1994, he moved to Sydney where he died on 9 March 1995 at the age of 80.

I would be most appreciative if a Wikipedia editor could assist in correcting this error. Thank you so much.

Yes, I can see what happened: in his obituary of Paul for the Guardian, Adam Sweeting linked your father’s name ("John Buckmaster") to a blog about Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, at a page which provides some details about the life of John Buckmaster, the son of Gladys Cooper. In our article about Cooper, her son is named as John Rodney (1915–83). So, now that you have provided us with more details about your and Paul’s father, such as his middle name and dates of birth/death: John Caravoglia (1914–1995), we have enough content to apply the required corrections.

I also wanted to double-check the correct procedure about using your family details as a source, as Wikipedia has very strict guidelines about this: all content must be verifiable and corroborated by reliable, secondary sources. Although you are related to Paul, the subject of this article, and therefore considered a primary source, our guidelines nonetheless allow for your details to be used to correct this specific error, especially since the information you have supplied about your parents is non-controversial.

Specifically, this guideline states:

An exception to editing an article about yourself or someone you know is made if the article contains defamation or a serious error that needs to be corrected quickly. Pdebee, You are right to identify unpublished personal family details as a red flag and be cautious. It looks to me like you have done your homework, the sequence of events you outlined which led to the error seems plausible and should be corrected, and your note looks like a good way to handle the issue. obviously, we would all be happier if we had a publish reliable source for the birth date of John Caravoglia Buckmaster, or other useful published material, but I think you've done enough. It is an interesting coincidence that two people with the same first and last names were born so closely together and both became English actors, but that's obviously what led to the confusion. Thank you so much for your prompt and re-assuring feedback, as I had not come across a case like this in all my time as an editor here, and wanted to make extra sure I followed and applied the guidelines correctly. I ran a google search on "John Caravoglia Buckmaster" and found nothing other than a few confusing entries in unusable genealogy sites. Yes, I agree with you about the strange coincidence of two contemporary English actors with the same first/last names, and I can see why Adam Sweeting would have conflated the two, under pressure to write Paul Buckmaster's obituary. But I am really pleased that our encyclopedia is now correct, thanks to the efforts of his sister to contact us here. Well, I don't think these cases happen very often, but if I come across another one, I'll know what to do next time!
