Identification of Morning/Evening Stars with Mars/Venus
[edit]This is far from obvious, and it is not based on the sources used in the article. The claim was introduced in 2009 with the edit summary "Add categories"[1]. Clearly this is not acceptable. All we have from the references so far is that the human sacrifice took place "when Mars was morning star". Far from supporting the claim that "Mars was called 'Morning Star'", this suggests that the Morning Star was sometimes Mars, and sometimes not, as is perfectly plausible from the fact that all planets are sometimes seen in the morning, and sometimes they aren't.
The source suggests, but is not explicit on the point, that the ceremony could only be held when Mars was visible in the morning at the time of spring equinox. Depending on your definition of "morning" (just before sunrise?), this will not be the case every year, but still reasonably often, every couple of years or so (I won't bother to calculate this unless we have some more explicit source on the rules). --dab (𒁳) 08:31, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
