Third World?

[edit]

The article currently states, regarding Mr. Pham:

And by extension, he was also the first person from a Third World country to fly into space.

However, Vietnam was a second world country, rather than an unaligned third world nation—at least in the sense that was relevant at the time Pham was a cosmonaut. —Ryanaxp 20:39, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What are you editing Wikipedia articles for? For living people to understand or for the dead who lived during the 1960s to understand? I put that back because it is correct and easily understandable for anybody who is not in a time warp.--lt2hieu2004 17:24, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Department of Redundancy Department

[edit]

There's something wrong with "Defence Industry of the Ministry of Defense" (the spelling isn't even consistent!), but I don't know how to fix it. Of what body is this dude actually the head? --Groyolo 20:22, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This dude (no disrespect, just thought the way you referred to him as "dude" is quite funny) is Head of the General Department of Defence Industry of the Ministry of Defence - In Vietnamese: Tổng cục trưởng tổng cục Công Nghiệp bộ Quốc Phòng. I fixed the spelling to make it more consistent.--lt2hieu2004 02:33, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move to "Pham Tuan"

[edit]

I moved this article to "Pham Tuan". Vietnamese diacritics are very rarely used in published English. Most of the other Vietnamese bios have already been moved. His name is given without diacritics by the official Vietnam News Agency, by the BBC, and by the Encyclopedia Astronautica (used as a source in this article). The article should not mislead the reader as to what the conventional English-language spelling of this name is. The conventional spelling should appear somewhere and the title is the most logical place since a typeable title is easier to link to and to search for. The name is still given as Phạm Tuân in the opening, per WP:MOSBIO. Kauffner (talk) 11:19, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vietnam in 1947

[edit]

Pace this diff, there was no "North Vietnam" before the country was partitioned in 1954. In 1947, the French were in Hanoi. So the North vs South terminology wouldn't even have made sense. It looks like "Tonkin" was the most common name for the North at that time. However, plenty of writers were already using "Vietnam" or "Viet Nam". I have ngrammed the various options here. Not the First Asian in Space?

[edit]

The second man to orbit Earth was Gherman Titov who was born in Siberia just north of Kazakhstan and west of Mongolia. The third man to orbit Earth (Andriyan Nikolayev) is an ethnic Chuvash (a Turkic people closely related to Uzbekhs and Kazakhs). Perhaps it might be more accurate to say that he was the first non-Soviet Asian in space? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.252.159.167 (talk) 21:41, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
