"Race" isn't a scientific term. It is a construct of self-identification of ancestry/etnicity in the US census. Is there a Wikipedi policy on the use of "race" vs. etnicity or ancestry? Erik Van Thienen 01:42, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, but you'll be fighting an uphill battle trying to convince people on WP on wording articles correctly with respect to race vs. ethnicity. —GodhevalT C W 15:28, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I do not have the time and do not know how to fix it, but there is a box at the top of the page that is displaying strangely and has garbled text. I have added the "cleanup" tag to it. Thank you.68.178.2.210 21:40, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Natives

[edit]

I always wonder about these kinds of categories in articles. Are all of these people really notable? Like Peyton Manning's mom? Her husband and sons are famous, but she isn't notable simply by association. I'm going to remove her, unless someone can tell me how she's notable outside of the fame of her family? Michael Jordan's mother was born in...some city...but I assure you that she's not listed as a notable native of that city. —GodhevalT C W 15:28, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Murder of three civil rights workers

[edit]

I see that reference to this event in the history of Philadelphia, MS keeps getting removed. It really belongs here. It's a significant, fully documentable event, perhaps the most prominent event in the town's history, apart from Reagen's initial speech of his Presidential campaign. In fact, without a reference to the killings, the brouhaha over Reagen's speech is incomprehensible. IMHO, it absolutely needs to be included, and the removals somehow stopped. djlewis (talk) 16:16, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, that seems to have slipped by without me noticing. I'll be on the watch for that in the future. —GodhevalT C W 19:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The only problem is that it did NOT happen in Philadelphia, although most people are uneducated about the actual events so the mix-up is understandable. I think it should be permanently removed from the website and also the political nonsense about Reagan's speech with it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.236.120.13 (talk) 06:45, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It'd be better to explain that the murders occurred outside of the city limits than to simply delete the information. Like it or not, the event is associated with the place. The way to inform people is to give them the right information. Where is the exact place the murders occurred?
As for Reagan's speech, there's no harm in including the speech's wider significance.   Will Beback  talk  07:12, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The murders supposedly occured several miles out of town just off of highway 19 heading towards Meridian. It should be posted on the page for highway 19 if you have to post it somewhere besides the actual page, it is an undeserved black shadow for the town. I'm not saying it wasn't terrible or that people should not know about it, just that it should not be on the page for Philadelphia, MS. As for someones opinions about a speech, they should not be on this page, there is no proof to what that person accuses Mr. Reagan of. I might as well post my opinion of the speech. I do not mean to start an argument or an "edit war" as you called it, I am sorry if I offended anyone, I just know the area very well and think both of these things should be kept to their own pages, instead of on the page to a city. For an alternative for the civil rights, you could mention that the city sheriff actually released the prisoners after they were first detained for exceeding the speed limit by 35 mph after fining one of the victims. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.236.120.13 (talk) 02:59, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reading the account of the murders, it's evident that the victims weren't simply waylaid and murdered outside of the town, but were first arrested and jailed in Philadelphia, then released and followed until outside city limits, at which time they were murdered. So the fact that the actual killing occured outside the city limits seems to be a minor point, but we can certainly add that to the text.
As for the Reagan speech, perhaps it'd be better to spin it off. It is apparently important enough to devote space to, but most of the discusion doens't concern the town. There are a couple of active editors who've been working on that section, so perhaps they'll pipe in with their views.   Will Beback  talk  17:55, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What happened was the sheriff escorted them to city limits and informed the Klan that they had left the city, so I guess you could put Philadelphia's involvement on the page, but I still believe the actual paragraph on the highway 19 page, as that is where the murders occured, and also possibly a section in the Bogue Chitto page, for that is where the bodies were discovered. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.236.120.13 (talk) 19:09, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Both the murders and the Reagan speech are mentioned in the article on Neshoba County, Mississippi too. As for the murders, they are associated in both scholarly and popular literature with Philadelphia, not with Highway 19.[1][2] Further, it appears that the murders didn't ocur on HWY 19, but perhaps on "Rock Cut Road".[3] In nay case, the murders are simply mentioned here and the main account is in a separate article, Mississippi civil rights workers murders. It'd be hard to make it much shorter here. It might be worthwhile to add this information (taken from the other article): In 2004, on the 40th anniversary of the murders, a multi-ethnic group of citizens in Philadelphia, Mississippi, issued a call for justice.[6] That would seem to give some credit back to the citizens of the city. Finally, the trial that convicted Edgar Ray Killen in 2005 took place in Philadelphia, which perhaps should also be mentioned here as it brought fresh attention to the city.   Will Beback  talk  17:36, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry your right, my memory failed me, they did occur on a small road just off the highway. I do agree with adding the extra information, there definitely is more to the story involving Philadelphia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.236.120.13 (talk) 22:40, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've decided to be WP:BOLD and spin off a new article based on the section. It needs a lot of work, since it's mostly copy and paste, and I think it's still undue weight, since the section is still bigger than the murders section, but it's an improvement, I think. --Mosmof (talk) 15:47, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
