why Quartz 2D Extreme is disabled

[edit]

Until now, under 'Quartz 2D & Quartz Compositor', the end of the first paragraph read...

In Mac OS X v10.4, Apple introduced Quartz 2D Extreme, which allows Quartz 2D to leverage supported GPUs for rendering. In Mac OS X 10.4, Quartz 2D Extreme is not enabled by default, as it offers few speed improvements in its current implementation.[4]

... with the citation at the end pointing to the Quartz section from Ars Technica's review of Tiger. The claim that 'it offers few speed improvements in its current implementation' is not at all supported by anything in that review, though -- in fact, the author claims exactly the opposite, and provides lots of numbers and bar graphs to back it up. I have no idea how somebody could have drawn any other conclusion.

So... i have changed that paragraph to the following:

In Mac OS X v10.4, Apple introduced Quartz 2D Extreme, which allows Quartz 2D to leverage supported GPUs for rendering. In Mac OS X 10.4, Quartz 2D Extreme is not enabled by default, because it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics.[4]

That last part (with citation of Apple's official word on the subject) is lifted from the Quartz 2D article. ~ lav-chan @ 04:30, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is this closed-source proprietary software? The article should mention. -- Beland (talk) 22:03, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
