Basis for classification

[edit]

I'd think it would be useful to summarize what the diagnostic criteria are for the divisions into the four realms. I know nothing about virology, so though I could copy some text from the individual definitions, I would probably get something wrong...! --Macrakis (talk) 20:43, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Macrakis This is a late reply, but I've expanded the article and included a brief description of each realm and some other information. Velayinosu (talk) 01:52, 14 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Velayinosu I appreciate the descriptions, but they're a bit technical- would this benefit from summarization or "translation" into less technical terms? I'm not sure what the target audience is here, though, so I'd like input. --Starcores (talk) 5:13, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
Starcores Are there specific examples that you feel are too technical? Note that I did not write the information on this article about Adnaviria or Ribozyviria, only the four others. And I do intend to go back over this article and make sure everything is updated and ordered neatly after working on a couple other articles. Velayinosu (talk) 00:22, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Velayinosu I guess what I'd add are examples of what the viruses in each class can do, like mentioning that duplodnaviria contains herpes simplex and chickenpox, just to establish a basis for what the viruses do for the majority of readers, who might not know what the difference between vertical jelly roll and HK97-fold major capsid proteins, if that makes sense? Maybe not as much of an edit as I originally thought, but please let me know your thoughts- I'm kinda new to it, and I want to make sure that the target audience isn't, say, bio majors who can't remember the technical terms before a test. This information is also found within the pages for each subcategory, so I guess I want to bring that information out into the summary but I'm not sure it is necessary. Starcores This article isn't intended to be directed solely toward biology majors but a lot of the vocabulary is definitely technical. The information about chickenpox and what not is in the individual section for the realm. It's not in the lead, which currently only has the defining characteristics of each realm. I can add more information to the lead about the viruses in each realm if that's what you're talking about. Velayinosu (talk) 01:26, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
