Controversy

[edit]

So, shouldn't there be info on the controversy due to the poor performance of Russia at the Games? 70.29.210.242 (talk) 01:42, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

CNN comment

[edit]

Someone added a mention of "Russia's worst performance in nearly 100 years", based on this CNN article which talks about "the country's worst performance in a Winter Olympics in nearly a hundred years". But that's nonsense. First of all, Russia only started competing as Russia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Despite popular misconceptions, Russia and the USSR are not synonymous. Crediting Soviet performances to Russia is rather like including Scottish performances in a credit to England at the Commonwealth Games. Second, and most importantly, the Soviet Union only began competing at the Winter Games in 1956! Even if you equate Russia and the USSR, it's only been competing for 54 years - which does not qualify as "nearly 100 years". Lastly, the article already says that "The 15 total medals were the country's 2nd lowest output since competing as Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union." I think that's quite sufficient. So I'm removing the meaningless CNN "information". Aridd (talk) 12:10, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
