Requested move

[edit]

Liberty GloUSAT Liberty Glo – "USAT Liberty Glo" is a more proper name for the article, with "Liberty Glo" a suitable redirect. Precedent in two other army transport articles USAT Dorchester and USAT Meigs, as well as numerous navy ships with "USS [shipname]". I didn't think I should just cut and paste these. — Bellhalla

Wichita

[edit]

Someone added this to the page:

This vessel was definitely NOT Liberty Glo. Liberty Glo was built at Hog Island as hull #517. She survived World War II, being renamed North Glow in 1947, and scrapped at Baltimore during 1951.

The actual Liberty in question was built at Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny NJ as Witchita (hull number 1), delivered to United States Shipping Board 7 October 1918. Her official number was 217061. At the outbreak of World War Two, she was owned by the US Maritime Commission and operated by Southgate Nelson Co. of Norfolk VA. She was loaned to the Army in late 1941, and under the command of Master Earle Ivey, she was lost off Bali as described.

The USS Wichita was a heavy cruiser that survived the war - see http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/dafs/CA/ca45.html

She was struck from the Navy list on 1 March 1959. Later that year, on 14 August, she was sold for scrapping to the Union Minerals and Alloys Corp.

I cannot find any reference to North Glow. They also state "the actual liberty in question" but if it was built in 1918 and called Wichita then it is not a Liberty in any way.

I reverted their comments.

Moved from USAT Liberty Glo

[edit]

I've found no evidence that supports that this ship, Liberty Glo (American International Shipbuilding/USSB hull no. 517), was ever a U.S. Army transport, much less the ship sunk by Japanese submarine I-116. All content that purportedly related to the the torpedoing of "USAT Liberty Glo" seems to have, in fact, been about USAT Liberty, and that information has been moved into that article. Because this article had the wrong information for quite some time, I've added a hatnote with a link to the other ship. All incoming links that pertained to the sinking and/or wreck have been pointed to USAT Liberty. — Bellhalla (talk) 18:14, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
