Wanted Samoa so to gain power in Europe! I think this is a gross over statement of Samoa's strategic and military worth to Europe in the 1870's. This needs to be removed. I think what was meant was that colonisation was important to the German Empire as there was little territory free to colonise at the time so as to rank with other European powers (very, very different concepts). Name of war

[edit]

Why is this called the First Samoan Civil War? Dictionary of Wars lists four separate Samoan Civil Wars: 1880–81, 1887–89, 1893–94, and 1898–99. This wikipedia entry seems to be an amalgamation of the 1887–89 and 1893–94 wars, despite the resolution of the 1887 war in 1889. Rwestera (talk) 22:53, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree with this. It seems like the user that created this article in 2006 just made up the title and topic. And Dictionary of Wars (which this article doesn't even follow the naming convention of) is an exceptionally weak source anyway - it's not a book on Samoan history. I've been reading some books more focused on Samoan history, and none of them call this the Samoan Civil War or the First Samoan Civil War or anything. Since it seems like consensus was very weak for this title originally, I'm inclined to think that this article, Second Samoan Civil War, and Samoan crisis should all be merged into some sort of History of Samoa, 1877–1899 article.
